The map combines the data for these three boat types, classed by major river basins. It shows that the amount of usage across Canada is closely correlated to population, but also that usage is distributed throughout most of Canada. The use of non-mechanized watercraft on freshwater is as old as the Canada's first inhabitants. The canoe and kayak, in particular, were developed by Aboriginal Canadians as their transport vehicles. Canoes played an exceptionally large role in the exploration of Canada: Europeans quickly adopted them for exploration and for the long-distance transport of furs. Sailboats (as used for recreational purposes) were largely introduced by Europeans to Canada and have had a much more recent history here. Today, all three types of vessels are widely used for recreational purposes by Canadians. The data on usage shown on the map, and in the figure below comes from a major survey conducted in 1997. This region, the most populated in British Columbia, is able to offer some of the most interesting waters in the province, from small lakes to raging rivers. In and around Vancouver and area that's known as the Greater Vancouver Regional District there's solitude to be found on Burnaby Lake, Buntzen Lake as well as Deer Lake. If you want fast and exciting waters there's the Capilano and Coquitlam Rivers, while Seymour River and Kanaka Creek-Fraser River are grade or class 1 to 2 runs. The larger lakes in this region, although close to civilization are often wilderness areas, where the shorelines can be steep and rugged, where winds can be chaotic and very sudden. One of the many larger lakes that is a great weekend get-away is Harrison , 125 km (78 mi.) east of Vancouver off Highway 7. Harrison Lake is 60 km (37.2 mi.) long and 9 km (5.58 mi.) wide in spots, its best you stay close to shore, watch the skies and always paddle with at least two or three boats. You can put in at the beach at Harrison Hot Springs to travel the beach road east and put in at the park and boat launch. There are frequent landing and camping sites on the west side of the lake, but on the east side camping is unorganized, landing and shelter can be hard to come by.

Start with a solid, well made roof rack and lash the canoe down to both cross bars. Tie both ends of the canoe to the bumpers. Rope is much better than rubber stretch ties. The best way is to secure the midpoint of a rope about 15 feet long to each end of the thwarts on the canoe, and lash the rope ends to the bumpers as far apart as possible in a Vee arrangement to keep the canoe secure in a crosswind. With so many different types of location it is not surprising that canoe and kayak styles vary widely, with at least 11 variations from flatwater canoeing and kayak touring, to surf kayaking and white-water rafting, reflecting the wide spectrum of usage, from relaxing recreation to extreme sport.
