Recreational Uses Canoeing, Kayaking and Sailing View this map In 1997 Statistics Canada conducted a survey in nature-related activities on the Importance of Nature to Canadians. The map combines the data for these three boat types, classed by major river basins. It shows that the amount of usage across Canada is closely correlated to population, but also that usage is distributed throughout most of Canada. The use of non-mechanized watercraft on freshwater is as old as the Canada's first inhabitants. The canoe and kayak, in particular, were developed by Aboriginal Canadians as their transport vehicles. Canoes played an exceptionally large role in the exploration of Canada: Europeans quickly adopted them for exploration and for the long-distance transport of furs. Sailboats (as used for recreational purposes) were largely introduced by Europeans to Canada and have had a much more recent history here. Today, all three types of vessels are widely used for recreational purposes by Canadians. The data on usage shown on the map, and in the figure below comes from a major survey conducted in 1997. In that year, Statistics Canada conducted a survey on behalf of a nationwide partnership of 16 federal, provincial and territorial agencies interested in nature-related activities. The

Extractions: Rock Creek National Park is collecting comments on its new General Management Plan . The focus of the Plan is clearly on transportation issues affecting commuters. As a result, the Plan neglects the health and water quality of the Creek as well as the recreation opportunities that the creek provides. Please lend your voice in support of American Whitewater and write to the Park Service to ask for the Plan to be modified to: (1) explicitly authorize canoeing and kayaking, and (2) include a planning mechanism for improving water quality throughout the Park and restoring the creek for fish health and viability, as well as for public health. Rock Creek Park is truly a gem in our nation's capital. It offers visitors an opportunity to reflect and soothe their spirits through the beauty of nature. Fresh air, majestic trees, wild animals, and the ebb and flow of Rock Creek emanate the delicate aura of the forest. -NPS General Management Plan

Extractions: Book a Trip Sea Kayaking in this area. This region, the most populated in British Columbia, is able to offer some of the most interesting waters in the province, from small lakes to raging rivers. In and around Vancouver and area that's known as the Greater Vancouver Regional District there's solitude to be found on Burnaby Lake, Buntzen Lake as well as Deer Lake. If you want fast and exciting waters there's the Capilano and Coquitlam Rivers, while Seymour River and Kanaka Creek-Fraser River are grade or class 1 to 2 runs. The larger lakes in this region, although close to civilization are often wilderness areas, where the shorelines can be steep and rugged, where winds can be chaotic and very sudden. One of the many larger lakes that is a great weekend get-away is Harrison , 125 km (78 mi.) east of Vancouver off Highway 7. Harrison Lake is 60 km (37.2 mi.) long and 9 km (5.58 mi.) wide in spots, its best you stay close to shore, watch the skies and always paddle with at least two or three boats. You can put in at the beach at Harrison Hot Springs to travel the beach road east and put in at the park and boat launch. There are frequent landing and camping sites on the west side of the lake, but on the east side camping is unorganized, landing and shelter can be hard to come by.

Extractions: Getting Your Canoe/Kayak There For most of us, getting our canoe/kayak to the water involves cartopping. Improper car topping can cause accidents and lost canoes/kayaks. Start with a solid, well made roof rack and lash the canoe down to both cross bars. Tie both ends of the canoe to the bumpers. Rope is much better than rubber stretch ties. The best way is to secure the midpoint of a rope about 15 feet long to each end of the thwarts on the canoe, and lash the rope ends to the bumpers as far apart as possible in a Vee arrangement to keep the canoe secure in a crosswind. A specialized kayak carrier is the safest investment you can make. Your kayak will cradle with specialized straps for a positive securing system. Tie down the bow and stern lines to the car bumper. This will give the kayak more lateral stability and will help secure the kayak and the racks to the car. Onto the Water and OffNot IntoBe Safe A frequent source of canoe/kayak damage (and wet paddlers) is the simple act of putting a canoe/kayak into the water and getting into it or getting ashore. Do not push a canoe/kayak across rough rocky shores. Carry them to the water. To carry a canoe the best method is one person on each side at the center of the canoe. At the waterÂ’s edge, lower one end onto the water and slide the canoe out and afloat, the bottom unscratched.
Extractions: America's Premier Canoe, Kayak and Rafting Organization The mission of the American Canoe Association (ACA) is to promote the health, social and personal benefits of canoeing, kayaking and rafting and to serve the needs of all paddlers for safe, enjoyable and quality paddling opportunities. The ACA strives to communicate the benefits of canoeing, kayaking and rafting as lifetime recreation and keeps participants informed about paddlesport opportunities and activities, thus helping to "grow" the sport. ACA's mission, membership, programming and education areas successfully reflect the diversity of today's Paddlesport community. No other US paddling organization has kept pace with ACA's success in attracting members or corporate sponsors. ACA's membership has grown from 5,000 to 50,000 in less than 10 years. ACA is the nation's recognized leader in the fields of Paddlesport instruction and education. Currently there are more than 4500 ACA-certified canoe and kayak instructors in the U.S. and more that 240 ACA instructor trainers. Collectively, these instructors teach ACA approved programs to an estimated 100,000+ students each year.

Canoeing Injuries | Kayaking Injuries canoeing kayaking injuries overview Free at the Sports Injury Bulletin A slalom boat is a shorter and wider craft than a sprint canoe to give it http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/canoeing-kayaking-injuries.html
Extractions: Close this window Background Humans have used canoes and kayaks for transport, hunting and fishing for centuries. But the origins of the modern sporting discipline lie with a British barrister, John MacGregor, who after studying ancient kayaks, designed a his own version, and then went on to found the Royal Canoe Club in 1866. Canoe regattas started a year later and the sport gained full Olympic status in 1936 . As with many non-traditional sports and extreme activities, the popularity of canoeing, both competitively and for recreation, has been increasing rapidly. A survey in 2000 put the numbers of paddlers in Britain at almost two million ; and while most of them take to the water in inland rivers (86%), the sea, lakes and reservoirs, canals and artificial white-water sites are also used. With so many different types of location it is not surprising that canoe and kayak styles vary widely, with at least 11 variations from flatwater canoeing and kayak touring, to surf kayaking and white-water rafting, reflecting the wide spectrum of usage, from relaxing recreation to extreme sport. The canoeist kneels to paddle, while the kayak user paddles sitting down. The kayak paddle has a curved blade on either end; the canoe paddle has a flat blade on only one end of the shaft. Slalom competition-standard canoes, unlike regular ones, are decked to keep water out of the boat. A slalom boat is a shorter and wider craft than a sprint canoe to give it greater manoeuvrability. The long, narrow sprint boat is fast but less stable. As with other fringe sports, increased participation brings with it greater hazard and injury risk, and with canoeing there are some fairly straightforward inherent dangers to being in a relatively unstable craft in moving water which is often fast-flowing and cold, in sometimes unpredictable environments. It is, therefore, not surprising that there is a high number not only of acute and chronic injuries, but also of fatalities.
