The sheer number and variety of its species have made Costa Rica one of the most admired territories on the planet when it comes to biodiversity. More than 200 species of mammals, around 850 species of birds, almost 200 types of amphibians and 220 species of reptiles inhabit these lands. Many tourist activities are sustained in harmony with wild animals. The mountains give shelter to the observation of birds, whose admirers lift their gazes toward the treetops in an attempt to spot their nests. The best places for bird watching are Braulio Carrillo National Park and its surroundings, Monteverde, Talamanca, and the Osa Peninsula. Every year on the Atlantic and Pacific Coast, one can observe the arrival of the turtles to lay their eggs in the soft sand of the beaches. Guided tours are organized to show you this marvelous demonstration of life itself, without adversely affecting the turtles.

It is the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, arbitrary and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds - not birds of prey. Ungrammatical advertising campaigns emphasized: "The Birds Is Coming." This Technicolor feature came after Psycho (1960) - another film loaded with 'bird' references. Novelist Evan Hunter based his screenplay upon the 1952 collection of short stories of the same name by Daphne du Maurier - Hitchcock's third major film based on the author's works (after Jamaica Inn (1939) and Rebecca (1940) ). In du Maurier's story, the birds were attacking in the English countryside, rather than in a small town north of San Francisco. The film's technical wizardry is extraordinary, especially in the film's closing scene (a complex, trick composite shot) - the special visual effects of Ub Iwerks were nominated for an Academy Award (the film's sole nomination), but the Oscar was lost to

The nomination and designation phase (Phase I) proved to be a successful collaboration of people and resources that has resulted in 17 IBAs and four IBA Complex's (IBAs focusing on individual species at multiple sites). These IBAs now form the basis of Audubon Vermont's conservation efforts designed to protect birds and the habitats critical to their survival.

Extractions: The saying "you are what you eat" has new meaning since the discovery that certain chemical elements in animal tissues are linked to diet. One such element is deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen that occurs naturally in rainwater and enters the food chain through the tissues of plants. Concentrations of deuterium vary predictably across the continent, with lower amounts occurring in northwestern regions of North America and higher amounts in southeastern regions. Scientists at Environment Canada's National Water Research Institute and Prairie and Northern Wildlife Research Centre in Saskatoon are world leaders in stable-isotope analysis. They have developed a method of measuring stable-hydrogen isotopes in the wing tissue of butterflies and birds as a means of determining origins. Experts at these facilities have recently expanded the application of this new technique to several projects related to the conservation and protection of bird species. The technique is being adopted by American and European researchers in studying animal migration. One recent project was to determine the breeding and moulting areas, also known as catchment areas, being sampled by two migration monitoring stations. Scientists analyzed stable-hydrogen isotope values in feathers of Swainson's Thrush moving through monitoring stations at Delta Marsh in Manitoba and Long Point in southern Ontario to verify that population counts at the two locations cover individuals from a large geographic area. Such information is vital to linking population declines to specific regions, and thereby focusing conservation efforts on these areas.

This virus can cause encephalitis or meningitis, infection of the brain and the spinal cord or their protective covering. For the past five years, WNV has caused disease in the United States. In 1999, at least 62 people became seriously ill, and seven of those died. Since then, WNV has rapidly spread throughout 46 states and the District of Columbia. During the year 2000, 21 human cases of WNV encephalitis were reported in the United States, with two deaths. In 2001 there were 56 cases with seven deaths. In 2002, 4,156 human cases of WNV encephalitis or WNV fever were reported, with 284 fatalities. In 2003, more than 9,700 human cases of WNV encephalitis and fever were reported from 46 states, with at least 223 fatalities to date. In Ohio in 2003, WNV was reported in 79 of 88 counties, either in birds, mosquitoes, humans, or horses. There were 107 human and 106 horse cases identified. It is expected that WNV will continue to be a disease threat in 2004.

Greenland, Bermuda and Hawaii are NOT included. ABA Area Total Ticks is determined by adding one's list for each state, province and territory within the ABA Area. For instance, if you have seen 25 birds in Arizona, 100 in California and 150 in British Columbia your ABA Total Area Ticks would = 275. The ABA Area total ticks is calculated for all species entered into eBird (Life), the current year (Year), or the current month (Month). "Abundance" is the average number of birds reported on all checklists within a specified date range and region. These data tell us what we might to expect when going out birding on an average day. The checklists used in this calculation include those that didn't report the species, providing a measure of relative abundance or how commonly the bird is reported compared to all other species in the region. For example, when looking at data for New York we see that during the week starting 15 May we can expect to find roughly 1 Yellow Warbler while out birding. In contrast, in the same region during the same week we see that zero Rough-legged Hawks, primarily a winter visitor, can be expected in an average days birding.

Hay fields and pastures are favorite nesting areas. The hen lays her clutch of about 12 eggs in a period of two weeks. After an incubation period of about 23 days chicks hatch and are ready to leave the nest as soon as their feathers dry off. They stay near the hen for the next several weeks.
