The almighty degree is the benchmark credential that tells the outside world that you've done your homework so to speak. You'll earn it because you took three 'W' classes, not two. You'll earn it because you'll have learned D.W. Griffith is the godfather of film or that Karl Marx and communism weren't as evil as you thought. Or maybe it was that required Freshman Experience class that put you over the top. Yes, I'm sure that's where it all came together for you, paved the way and cleared the cobwebs. You know the first thing I ask a girl at a party is how many Q classes she's taken. Point is, the sheer relativity of 'intelligence' flies in the face of general education requirement's rationale. More simply put, you aren't any more knowledgeable if you've written 50 more pages than the next guy. If you can see your time here with this reality in mind you can begin to take your career at UConn with even less grains of salt than those kegs of Busch Light ever allowed for. Just 41 miles southwest of here is a small liberal arts school named Wesleyan University, highly regarded, that doesn't believe in gen-eds. It's a glorious and magical campus where students are free to find what they enjoy doing without an administration molding their education into the classical ideal of a renaissance man - well-rounded at all costs, often in the form of winter and summer intersession classes.

I have had some rather unpleasant experiences in general education classes, but this was not because of the subject matter - it usually involved the teaching style and practices of a specific teacher. I don't think all of them were worthless just most of them.
