Water and sun safety are paramount, as is keeping children hydrated and cool. You also should protect kids from insects that can transmit harmful diseases or make them miserably itchy. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death in children and teens. Small children can drown in just a few inches of water such as bathtubs, buckets, fountains or puddles. But with summer come even greater risks as children play in pools, lakes, rivers and oceans. Caution must be taken and children should always be closely supervised and never left alone when in or near water. Even if children know how to swim, it does not mean they are safe. Air-filled flotation devices like water wings are not a replacement for a life preserver, which all children should wear when boating. And there are the bugs. Beware of ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes. Check yourself and your kids carefully for ticks after being in the woods. For mosquitoes, empty containers of standing water to deter breeding, use insect repellent and avoid being out at dusk. For chiggers, try an old home remedy; rub powdered sulfur, which you can find at the drug or garden supply store, around ankles, waistline and other spots where they like to bite. This is especially helpful if children are playing in grassy areas or berry picking. If they still get bites, a dab of anti-itch cream like Benadryl usually helps. And dont forget to watch out for poison ivy; its very common in our area.

The fields were fenced and locked so that in order for kids to play, an adult had to reserve or rent the facility. When the game was played, responsible adults were needed to supervise the kids, and make sure they behaved themselves. Coaches were needed to train the kids in the proper methods for warming up before a game and cooling down afterwards. They taught the kids the right techniques for holding a ball, kicking a ball, hitting a ball, and throwing a ball. They taught the kids the rules and made sure they obeyed them. They even supplied the only sanctioned snack (as any soccer mom can tell you) - oranges, cut into quarters. Parents, of course, came to the games to cheer their kids on. After investing so much in the gear and training, they naturally wanted to see how well their progeny did. From the sidelines they'd scream, yell, and shout their kids to victory. Kids on the losing team were often belittled and berated by parents and coaches who seemed to take the game loss as a personal failure. Grown-ups in the stands erupted into full-blown tantrums over close calls or bad calls by umpires and referees. For the adults, winning was everything, losing wasn't an option, and fun wasn't even a consideration.

For instance, children under age one were at a greater risk from falls associated with furniture, stairs and baby walkers. Children ages one to four suffer from fall-related injuries that tend to occur in the home and at playgrounds. Children ages 10 to 14 are injured due to sports-related activities and playground equipment. Injuries resulting from these falls range from a fracture to injury to the brain and spinal cord. Other major findings were that children one to four had the highest rate of fall-related injuries compared to any other age group. "Many concerns for parents and other caregivers of keeping kids safe does not include protecting them from a fall," says Jeanne Bietz, Nebraska SAFE KIDS Coordinator. "This report brings to light the need to practice better preventative measures to keep kids from being injured to the point they must visit the hospital." There are many proven preventative measures that can be taken to reduce hospitalizations due to falls. These measures include proper supervision of children in the home and on playgrounds, adequate surfacing under playground equipment, the proper use of safety equipment such as a helmet when riding a bike, roller blading or skate boarding and adequate education on sports safety.
