Extractions: The goal to raise enough money to outfit each second-, third- and fourth-grader in the Simpson County School System with a safety helmet has been surpassed. Heidi Satterly Fleming, who headed up the drive, said $6,264 had been contributed as of Tuesday. Some $5,200 were needed to provide the 735 students at Simpson Elementary with the free safety helmets, which can be used to protect children from head injuries when they are biking, roller blading or skate boarding. All of the students have been sized, and Ms. Fleming said the helmets will be distributed at the school in about two weeks. Ms. Fleming, who suffered severe head injuries in an automobile crash, is the Simpson County chairperson of the Brain Injury Association. She said all of the money raised in Simpson County will remain here. Ms. Fleming said plans are underway to team up with the Health Department and conduct a bike rodeo when other free helmets can be distributed. She may also hand some out during community events.
