Extractions: DAY 1ST The 19th Winter Olympic Games have started at the Salt Lake City in Utah. We plan to cover the events at the Olympics, the first Games in the third millennium, from today onward. The opening ceremony of the games was held on Friday at the Salt Lake City. The main topic of the games in which about 2 500 sportsman and women from 77 countries participate, is the idea of making united efforts by the civilized world in the fight against the threat of terrorism. The march of the teams was traditionally head by the sportsmen from Greece, the country that founded Olympic Games. The ceremony was ended with a colorful show and a firework. The Russian team includes 162 sportsmen and women and is second to the US team only. Among them are 13 Olympic champions, five skiers, one biathlon and seven hokey players. The Russian team will compete in all sport events. Experts believe that Russian team has good chances in skiing, biathlon, figure skating and hockey, the sports that Russia traditionally has been excelled. Russian sportsmen are also competing in curling, short-track and skeleton, new sports for them. Ekaterina Mironova has a good chance to win gold in skeleton. Among the other participants are sportsmen from ten member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and three former Soviet Baltic republics, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. They are competing in many programs and hope to win gold medals too. Among them are Estonians Cristina Shigun in skiing and Ukraines Aleona Zubrilova in biathlon, Lithuanias figure skaters Margarita Drobyako and Povilas Vanagas.

Extractions: Vol. 09, No. 02 Dear Reader: The International Olympic Committee's recently-published analysis of the Atlanta Olympic Games television coverage in the U.S. indicates that women made up 52% of the American viewing audience. NBC's cumulative audience in 1996 was a whopping 222.7% higher than its Barcelona 1992 audience. Viewership rose in several categories including increases of 46% for all adults aged 50 or older, 35% for women in the 35+ age group, and 31% for women in the 18+ age group. Viewership among young people grew at a much slower rate. For all viewers in the 12- to 24-year-old group there was only a 2% increase. Different strokes for different folks . . . Gymnastics drew the highest television rating among Olympic viewers in the U.S. The top-rated sport in Spain was tennis. In Brazil it was boxing. Germans favored fencing and judo. Italians liked volleyball best. The Chinese tuned into diving. South Koreans were glued to badminton coverage and South Africans to field hockey. Track and field led the way in Canada, France, Hong Kong, Japan and Great Britain. Add Different Strokes . . . Team handball was virtually invisible during NBC's coverage of the Atlanta Olympic Games. In Norway, though, it was big stuff.

Extractions: It's not boring; it's a magnificent feat of fitness and endurance Cross-country aficionados bummed over sparse coverage will get their fill of snowy swooshing this year. NBC has staked out over 30 camera positions along busy Soldier Hollow's trails and plans to televise more of the races than ever before. (The relatively action-packed relays air on NBC February 17 and 21.) But the skiing isn't exactly hair-raising, what with its lack of leaping, speeding, and spinning. The sport's want of "wow factor" is offset by its focus on fitness and endurance, says Paul Robbins, a spokesman for the U.S. ski team. Per Elofsson of Sweden, the defending World Cup champ, trains by running through swamps and roller skiing up mountains. Russia, Norway, Finland, and Italy are, with Sweden, on track to repeat past victories. The U.S. team is the strongest since 1984, Robbins says, but the Arctic countries live for this stuff. -Samantha Levine NORDIC COMBINED

Extractions: (Note: Olympic theme midi plays once) Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.
Olympic Games, Spirit And Modern History The most important thing in the olympic Games is not to win but to take part, The biathlon, bobsled and luge, crosscountry skiing, skating and many of http://2002.uen.org/html/sports/lessons/olympicgames.html
Extractions: The first recorded Ancient Games was held in 776 B.C. in ancient Europe, but evidence suggests that Games were being held long before that. Originally, competition consisted of a single foot race over a distance of 200 meters, but within a short time, the event grew to include five sports or a pentathlon. The "Olympiad" became an important event and was held every four years. During Olympic years, warring city-states were encouraged to lay down their weapons and to compete in peace on the playing field instead of on the battlefield. The Olympic Games were canceled in 394 A.D. for religious reasons. Greece, as part of the Roman Empire, had become Christian and the games were considered Pagan. Centuries later, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, recommended that the Olympic Games be restored. Coubertin believed in the spirit of Olympism; a set of values that enhance the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of participants through sport, art and music, while promoting friendship and understanding throughout the world. Due to his work, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established and Athens, Greece had the honor of being the first city to host the modern Games in the year l896. June 23, l896 was designated as "Olympic Day" throughout the world.

The History Of The Olympic Games The history of the olympic Games The olympic competitions for winter sportsbegan in 1924. Aquatics, Fencing, Softball, biathlon http://www.wam.umd.edu/~leannajf/olympics.html
Extractions: The Olympics are a multi-sport event that takes place every four years. The modern summer Olympics have been held every 4 years since 1896 except during the World Wars. The Olympic competitions for winter sports began in 1924. They were held in the same year as the summer Olympics until 1994, when they began to be held on separate 4-year cycles that were staggered by two years. The Olympics have their origins in ancient Greece. Many myths exist as to how the games began. One of these is that the god Zeus held the first Olympics as a celebration of his victory over his father, Cronus, after which he became the king of the gods. Another of these myths traces the origin of the games to a commemoration of the chariot race between Pelops and King Oenomaus, in which Pelops won the hand of the Kings daughter. The games were held in Olympia in particular because of its religious importance, for an important temple of Zeus was located there, but also because of its location, for it was an easy port for Greeks coming from neighboring territories to reach.
