For more information about any of these items, contact Edward Felten October-November 2000: October 1999: Karsten Sohr at the University of Marburg has discovered another serious security flaw in Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine. A bug in Microsoft's bytecode verifier allows the construction of code sequences that illegally cast values of one Java type to values of another unrelated type, in violations of Java's typing rules, without detection by Microsoft's verifier. A malicious applet can exploit this flaw to breach the JVM's security, and can then proceed to do anything it wants to do on the victim's computer. For example, a malicious applet might exploit this flaw to read private data, modify or delete files, or eavesdrop on the user's activities. Dirk Balfanz and Edward Felten of the Princeton Secure Internet Programming Lab have constructed a demonstration applet that exploits this flaw to delete a file.
VB.NET Programming With The Public Beta - From The Publisher This practical and timely introduction to the new .NET version of one of theworld s most popular programming languages provides a comprehensive overview of http://www.vbip.com/books/1861004915/pub.asp
Extractions: VB.NET Programming with the Public Beta vbip.com's Review - From the publisher - Summary of Contents Sample Chapter From the publisher Book Overview Visual Basic .NET is the next version of Visual Basic and a major part of Microsoft's .NET initiative. VB.NET is a significant upgrade that is far more flexible and powerful than previous versions. This practical and timely introduction to the new .NET version of one of the world's most popular programming languages provides a comprehensive overview of the new capabilities that make Visual Basic a true object-oriented programming language like Java and C/C++ - an extremely attractive choice for professional enterprise development. Additional capabilities include full inheritance, structured error handling and new threading models. This book explores the new capabilities of VB.NET and illustrates important changes and differences from previous versions. Beginning with an overview of the .NET framework and an explanation of how VB.NET fits in, the book then concentrates on all the key changes; including new OO capabilities, before ending with a sample application which shows all the new features in action.
Extractions: MIDletPascal Review MIDletPascal comes with user-friendly IDE (integrated development environment) for Windows. The IDE has integrated compiler, Java bytecode preverifier, JAR archive builder and emulator so compiling and building MIDlets is as easy as a push of a button. You don't even need to have Java SDK installed on your computer! Since MIDletPascal generates low-level Java bytecode, generated MIDlets have small footprint and run fast. Some similar tools that can be found on the Internet generate an intermediate code and pack it with an interpreter into a JAR file - that approach creates large JAR files for distribution and yields slow execution .MIDletPascal directly generates Java bytecode, so you don't need Java compiler installed on your machine, and compile process is very fast.

Extractions: Chess Program Sources Computer Chess Books Tree search is one of the central algorithms of any game playing program. The term is based on looking at all possible game positions as a tree, with the legal game moves forming the branches of this tree. The leaves of the tree are all final positions, where the outcome of the game is known. The problem for most interesting games is that the size of this tree is tremendously huge, something like W^D, where W is the average number of moves per position and D is the depth of the tree, Searching the whole tree is impossible, mainly due to lack of time, even on the fastest computers. All practical search algorithms are approximations of doing such a full tree search. These pages give an overview of traditional, fixed depth minimax search, with various refinements such as selective extensions and pruning, as used in most modern chess programs. There are other, more experimental, game tree search techniques that take a different approach, like e.g. B* and conspiracy numbers, which I hope to describe at a later time. This overview covers the follwoing subjects: The various search algorithms are illustrated in a compact pseudo-C. The
ACCU Reviews: C# Programming With Public Beta Review C programming with Public beta. Note the description that this bookis based on a public beta, if it really is public why did they not arrange http://www.accu.org/bookreviews/public/reviews/cs/cs002323.htm
Extractions: Recommended ISBN: Publisher: Wrox Press Pages: Price: Categories: C# Reviewed by Francis Glassborow in C Vu 13-2 (Apr 2001) Now, unless I have things badly wrong this book has a serious problem, unless you are an MSDN subscriber you can only read it. Without being able to try out the code and experiment with it, the book looses a great deal of its value. It is easy to read the specifications of a language but getting you mind round it means that you must get your hands dirty by trying a bit o coding. Of course, as a journalist I could go and nag Microsoft for a copy of the beta software (well I probably will anyway) but that would miss the point. This book is likely to be bought by enthusiasts who then find that the have no easy legal access to the software that the authors have based their work on. Note the description that this book is based on a public Beta, if it really is public why did they not arrange for a CD copy with the book. Yes the authors do say you will need to get a copy and that you can get that free if you are an MSDN subscriber or on CD for a nominal charge, but readers are likely to see this too late. If you have access to the relevant software, this book will get you started with using it, if you do not, then leave the book on the shelf. If Microsoft really want C# to become popular, they need to make it a little more accessible.
