Time.com People Fortune EW Opposition supporters rally on the eve of polling MINSK, Belarus (CNN) Security services in Belarus are threatening to clamp down on any protests held after polling stations close on Sunday. Opposition groups have called for a peaceful rally after the vote, which is widely predicted to return incumbent Alexander Lukashenko to power. Lukashenko, dubbed 'Europe's last dictator' by his opponents, looks assured of victory but has been criticised by the West for his records on human rights and press freedom. But domestically the 47-year-old former collective farm director is widely admired for his popular touch and maintaining salaries and pensions. His main rival, trade unionist Vladimir Goncharik, has alleged undue pressure from the authorities on his campaign. MORE STORIES ANALYSIS: Shadow over poll Goncharik supporters have called for a rally in the capital, Minsk, when voting finishes at 8 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) and although local authorities are playing down the threat, security chiefs will be on high alert.

Time.com People Fortune EW Belarus' former national flag is waved by opposition supporters during a Minsk rally MINSK, Belarus Hundreds have taken to the streets of Minsk to protest at the landslide victory of Belarus' incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko, who is branded in the West as a virtual dictator, won another five-year term in Sunday's elections, registering 75.6 percent of the vote. His closest opposition, 61-year-old Vladimir Goncharik won 15.4 percent, while centrist politician Sergei Gaidukevich obtained 2.5 percent, election commission chairwoman Lidia Yermoshina said on Monday. But the election has been dogged by allegations of a smear campaign against the official opposition candidates through state media manipulation, and vote rigging. Demonstrators defied the law on Monday and waved the former national flag in an hour-long protest at the vote in Minsk's central square, following similar action on Sunday.
