The U.S. automaker is planning to invest only $9.8 million in Belarus for a 51 percent stake in a $19.2 million plant with an annual capacity to assemble 6,000 units of Escort cars and Transit vans from imported kits. But Ford said the venture, named Ford Union (FU), was full of symbolism and potential. The plant will be located at Obchuck, six km (four miles) northeast of Minsk. FU's opening ceremony on July 30 will mark the first time that passenger vehicles will be built in Belarus, which became a major manufacturer of agricultural tractors and heavy trucks for the old East bloc.
