Extractions: Baseball Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal. Click a link to

Lapchick Special for the Sports Business Journal Like so many who follow sports, I have been glued to the news about Kobe Bryant , now charged with sexual assault. Let me say up front that I am not a Lakers fan. I was not even a fan of Kobe until this year when I read of the turmoil he went through with his parents when he fell in love with and married his wife Vanessa . That made me pay more attention to the seemingly softer, loving side of the sports icon. That made the charge against him even more striking. I have spent nearly 30 years studying sport and social issues. Each time an athlete is arrested I take note and fear the inevitable consequences. Some in the media and many fans will claim that athletes, especially basketball and football players, are more violent than ordinary men. Stories about basketball and football players battering or sexually assaulting a woman are so common in the press, averaging nearly 100 cases a year for the last five years, that people barely take notice now. Averaging two reports a week for five year makes the general public simply note, "another example of a violent sport."

IUPUI Athletics Staff Bio - Ron Hunter Coach Hunter is the face of IUPUI basketball, IUPUI Director of a majorasset to both the University in general and Jaguars Athletics in particular. http://www.iupui.edu/~jagsport/Staff/Coaching/hunterbio.html
Extractions: The nations most exciting head coach, Ron Hunter , returns to the IUPUI bench for his eleventh season in 2004-05. Hunter, widely known for his demonstrative sideline antics and fiercely competitive nature, has taken the IUPUI basketball program to an entirely new level over the past few seasons. Over the past two years, Hunter has become one of the hottest coaching commodities in the nation after guiding the Jaguars to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 2002-03 and leading them to their second straight 20-win season in 2003-04. After IUPUI captured a thrilling 66-64 win over Valparaiso in the 2003 Mid-Continent Conference title game, the reigning Mid-Con Coach of the Years emotions carried him into a celebration that epitomized the magnitude of March Madness and college basketball. Last season, Hunter took IUPUI to their third consecutive Mid-Con Championship game and improved his mark to 8-3 (.727) in the conferences postseason. During the regular season, he saw his squad pick up its first-ever win over a Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe and crack the CollegeInsider.coms Mid-Major Top 25 for the first-time ever. Individually, Hunters 2003-04 team boasted the Mid-Con Player of the Year in Odell Bradley and the leagues top defensive player in Matt Crenshaw. The Hunter-led Jags also had one of the nations best three-point shooters in junior Akeem Clark. His squad also showed some grit as a tough team on the road as evidenced by wins at Valparaiso, Oakland and Oral Roberts. In the non-conference season, the Jaguars were equally as tough, beating East Tennessee State and Pepperdine on neutral floors and taking West Virginia and No. 24 Dayton to the wire before losing a pair of heartbreakers.
