University at Buffalo BASEBALL Roster Coaches Schedule / Results News Head Coach Office: 310 Stadium Bill Breene is set to begin his sixth season as head coach of the recently resurrected UB baseball program. After almost a 20-year absence, the University at Buffalo reinstated baseball as a varsity sport in November of 1998 and began play as an NCAA Division I independent in 2000. Last season (2004) marked UBs fourth as a member of the Mid-American Conference, a conference nationally recognized for its rich baseball tradition. The return to coaching for Breene signified a career that has come full circle. He began his career in intercollegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year starter as an infielder for the Golden Eagles. Breene attended USM as both an undergraduate, graduating in 1975, and graduate student, majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Athletic Administration and Coaching, respectively. "When I was asked if I would be interested in rebuilding our baseball program, I was thrilled," Breene said. "Having been here (UB) throughout the entire athletic upgrade endeavor, I knew that we would be given the support and opportunity to be successful. UB has done that by providing us with a budget to compete, allowing us to travel to regions where we can get games in early March, and continuing efforts to renovate Amherst Audubon Field to a level comparable to other MAC schools. In a short time, we have built a great foundation for the future of the program."

My parents moved there in 1975 (I was two years old) as missionaries to the Japanese people. I picked up the language naturally by watching television, playing with my Japanese friends, and just living every day immersed in the culture. It was a wonderful life full of many opportunities that otherwise would not have come my way. I started teaching Japanese at McCallie in 1998. Working with 7 th and 8 th grade guys has been a wonderful experience.
