As an educator who works as a teacher and administrator in both a public and a private school, I frequently find myself reflecting upon both the benefits and the frustrations found in the two settings. Most of the benefits relate directly to work with students and teachers; the frustrations tend to relate to politicians, schools of education, and societal attitudes that are peripheral to what occurs daily in the classroom. When their rhetoric is analyzed, the main agenda for the politicians at all levels is the fiscal bottom line. Because the students at my private school are funded by their local school districts, that fiscal bottom line is an issue in both settings where I work. Schools of education and our society appear to struggle with the desire for a "one size fits all" approach to education, and in the process they lose sight of the question of what, in life, is the real bottom line?
