Whether a child is heading back for his or her senior year or beginning kindergarten, now is an appropriate time for children to review some important safety procedures for traveling to and from school. Riding the Bus School bus transportation is very safe. In fact, school buses are safer than cars. Even so, in 2000, 26 students were killed and approximately 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didnt occur in a crash, but while students were entering and exiting the bus. For children who ride the bus to and from school, there are some easy safety tips to remember: Have a safe place to wait for the bus, away from traffic and the street. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals to enter. When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk 10 giant steps away from the bus, and keep a safe distance from the bus at all times. Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.

Violence becomes an acceptable way to settle conflicts When this happens, children cannot learn and teachers cannot teach. Creating a safe place where children can learn and grow depends on a partnership among students, parents, teachers, and other community institutions to prevent school violence. How do these ideas translate into action? Here are some practical suggestions for young people, parents, school staff, and others in the community.

NHTSA: People: Injury Prevention: Children back to school Safely A colorful game and activities booklet for elementary school children pedestrian, school bus and passenger car safety issues. http://nhtsa.gov/people/injury/buses/children.htm
Extractions: Students are at much greater risk traveling to and from school than at any other time in their school day. During the 1998-99 school year, about 800 children between the ages of 5 through 18 were killed during normal school transportation hours while traveling by passenger car, foot, bicycle, public transportation and school bus.1 Many more were injured or suffered close calls. These injuries and deaths affect everyone in the community. Guideline For The Safe Transportation Of Pre-School Age Children In School Buses NHTSA recommends pre-school age children transported in school buses always be transported in properly secured Child Safety Restraint Systems (CSRSs). This guideline will help school and child care transportation officials develop and implement policies and procedures for the use of CSRSs on school buses. Kids, The School Bus, and You (English)
Extractions: Comments: Like in most areas, many preschool facilities and child care centers where I live use vans equipped with special features for transporting preschoolers, toddlers and infants. In many instances, these vans have been decorated or furnished to look like mini school buses. This really helps young children to make an easy transition to the traditional school bus and they feel like they are also going to school like older children. I thought I would share this fun, practical and educational concept.

Extractions: SEND CHILDREN BACK TO SCHOOL ... SAFELY We are approaching back-to-school times for students across the Susquehanna Valley. Amid the excitement of new teachers, classes and friends, it's easy to forget the day-to-day hazards that go along with school attendance particularly for younger students. Transportation to and from school, whether on the school bus, by foot or by car, is a high-risk part of the day commonly overlooked in the hubbub surrounding a new school year. American Red Cross safety experts urge parents to set aside some time with their children to discuss important precautions about school transportation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), school bus transportation is one of the safest forms of transportation. However, accidents happen. On average, nine passengers under the age of 19 die in school bus crashes each year. Additionally, an average of 23 children die in these crashes as pedestrians. "As school begins, we encourage families to develop a safety plan," said Angie Dearolf, spokesperson for the local American Red Cross. "Review basic safety rules for walking, biking or riding to school, and decide what will be done in case of an emergency." For Bus Riders Line up facing the school bus door, not along the side of the school bus.

Extractions: Safety Precautions from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons For Immediate Release: August 23, 2001 ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Parents across the country are heading out for the best deals on backpacks, notepads and pencils, but these are not the only back-to-school supplies that kids will need. Helmets, knee pads and wrist guards could be the most important gear for children who ride their bicycles or skate to school. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reminds parents that children need proper safety equipment for an injury-free commute to and from school. "There's always lots of excitement when a new school year begins, but parents may not think to check safety gear for their children who ride bikes or rollerblade to school," says ASPS President Walter Erhardt, MD. "All year plastic surgeons treat children injured in bicycle or skating collisions. Proper helmet and wrist guard use minimizes soft-tissue injuries of the face and hands such as bruises, scrapes and cuts." Dr. Erhardt reminds parents that while these common mishaps may seem insignificant, particular concern should be given to injuries on the face where the potential for scarring and nerve damage exists. It is important that a surgeon qualified to repair the face and all areas of the body treat the injuries.

Extractions: I do a lot of training on school crisis teams and so often an educator comes up and says, "We have a crisis team. At least I think we do. I might be on the team, but we have never met and I have no idea what I am supposed to do!" Shakespeare wrote in Macbeth, " A false sense of security is mortals chiefest enemy." Many schools crisis plans that address what to do in the aftermath fail to include prevention activities. Adolescents are dying at a record rate. The Center for Disease Control estimates that approximately one out of 1000 high school students dies or is killed each year. Since the leading causes of death for children in order are: accidents, homicides, and suicide, it is important that prevention programs be implemented to reduce each of these. Why can they not be a part of school curriculums and crisis plans? I applaud recent legislation in Texas that requires every school to have a violence prevention plan. It is my hope that curriculum time will be devoted to that goal.
