While driving, concentrate on the road and the other vehicles sharing it with you. Do not read, put on make-up, or turn and talk to passengers, all of which cause inattention to the road. Talk with and instruct your school age children about the dangers of walking, riding bicycles, and driving along the streets. Bicycles should drive the same direction as motor vehicles; staying next to the right road edge, and riders under 18 years old must always wear a safety helmet. Pedestrians should walk the opposite direction as traffic, facing the traffic and wear light colored clothing during hours of darkness.

Watch for children “Be aware when you’re driving around town,” said Mosteller. “It’s not unusual for school aged children to unexpectedly dart into traffic in residential areas when walking to and from school.” Watch for marked crosswalks and yield to pedestrians “Many of our schools use crossing guards to assist children cross our busy streets,” said Mosteller. “Motorists should always heed the directions of the crossing guard to ensure that all children are allowed to safely cross the street.”

"As children return to school, it's important for parents and children to go over safety tips together," says Jennifer McCrocklin, Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition. "This will help ensure a safe, enjoyable school year for everyone." The Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition offers these guidelines to help parents and caregivers keep children safe this back-to-school season: About 23.5 million students ride school buses daily. Although this is one of the safest ways to travel to and from school, injuries do occur. In 1998, 21 children ages 14 and under were killed in school bus-related traffic crashes. An estimated 6,000 children were injured in school bus-related incidents. More than half of the children killed were pedestrians. Many injuries happen when children are boarding or exiting the bus. A blind spot extends about 10 feet in front of the bus, obstructing the driver's view. Children are not aware of this blind spot and might mistakenly believe that if they can see the bus, the bus driver can see them. The Austin SAFE KIDS Coalition offers these important tips for school bus safety:

Megan's Law requires that any person jailed for a sexual offense and then released be "registered" in the neighborhood where they live. This is public record and parents should utilize it by visiting the police station and researching the route to school.
