But that statistic should come as no surprise to the nation's teachers: In a new survey, seven out of 10 say their classrooms aren't regularly disinfected by custodians, and more than half say they spend their own money and time ridding their classrooms of germs.

If you are like many physicians, you are practicing medicine today because you knew someone who inspired you to follow that path. The AMA Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC) is calling on all minority physicians to fill a similar role for children in their communities by taking part in Doctors Back to School. Dr. Maurice Scholas visits a classroom. What is Doctors Back to School? Doctors Back to School is a program that aims to raise awareness of the need for more minority physicians and to encourage children from underrepresented minority groups to look at medicine as a career option. Through Doctors Back to School, physicians and medical students across the country visit schools and community organizations to help young minority children realize they, too, can follow the same path. The program continues year round and was orginally launched in March 2002. The lastest Doctors Back to School kit is available online. Physicians are encouraged to continue making visits to schools and other community programs whenever they can during the year. Why is it important?

Extractions: Back to School 2001: Bad teeth epidemic among poor children Sunday, August 26, 2001 By Rachel Smolkin, Post-Gazette National Bureau Six-year-old Edith Becerra has a toothache, but her mother can't find a dentist to treat her. Edith's tooth began hurting when a filling fell out. Now, she's having trouble eating, and her mother worries that the pain will worsen, making it difficult for her to do her schoolwork as she begins first grade tomorrow. "I know what a toothache is, and I know she's going to have problems in school if they don't attend to it now," said Evelia Becerra, who speaks only Spanish. First in a series 5 Pitt dental students learn of the need first-hand Becerra, an apple-packer in Erie, asked a migrant health services coordinator to help her find a dentist quickly. But only two dental clinics in the Erie area take patients on Medicaid, the government program for low-income families. Becerra was told that the earliest possible appointment for Edith was Dec. 28 four painful months away. Tooth decay, a common chronic childhood condition, is easily treated in most young children. But many low-income children in America do not have such care, either because they have no dental insurance or because their parents cannot find a dentist who will treat them.

Most children aren't too thrilled about having to hit the books, and school even can be a source of anxiety for some. What can parents do to help ease the back-to-school transition? CNN's medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, offered a few tips Monday. GUPTA: [Going back to school] can be an anxiety-provoking time. No question about it, and especially 5- to 7-year-olds and 11- to 14-year-olds. Those kids are likely to call in sick the first couple of days in part because [of] a new day of school. Also in part because it's usually a new school in those age groups. So a lot of those kids are very concerned. Kids can worry about just about anything. And no doubt they worry if their teachers are going to like them, if their colleagues are going to like them, how are they going to get home after school. They have all of these concerns that may seem pretty obvious to parents but not all so obvious to the kids. And that leads to a lot of different tips that parents can hear about from various experts, and also kids can keep track as well.

Extractions: August 19, 2002 Harman Hosts Back-To-School Health Fair SAN PEDRO - Children from across the Harbor area received free immunizations at a health fair sponsored by Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Redondo Beach) at Harbor Free Clinic in San Pedro. "It's back-to-school time, and as parents we all have a lot to do to prepare," said Harman. "Ensuring our children's health should be our first priority." Harman also added, "A healthy mind comes with a healthy body. Vaccinating children now ensures that students will not be caught in the last minute rush before the school year starts." California requires all children entering kindergarten and 7th grade to be vaccinated against common childhood illnesses, such as measles and chicken pox. The cost of the full schedule of 15 immunizations can be prohibitive, and the availability of free vaccines is limited by resources. Harbor Free Clinic is an independent clinic that receives funds from Los Angeles County through the Public-Private Partnership Program. Proposed cuts to the County health budget could jeopardize support for this program. Harman spoke about the need for sustained County funding: "I pledge to do everything I can to find additional federal funds for Los Angeles County's public healthcare system."
Going Back To School Suggestions for dealing with the backto-school blues and the first-day nervousness. http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/school/back_to_school.html
Extractions: It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school. The First Day Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom. You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day. But it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did and so will your new friend! Moving to Middle School?
