Extractions: Question: I am about to receive my Associates of Applied Science in Computer Aided Drafting, and I was looking into going to a state university for my bachelor's degree, but they will not accept my associate's degree. I was informed that they cannot accept credits from my school because they do not accept ACICS accreditation. I am told I would have to start all over again, and re-take all my gen-ed classes. Is there anything I can do or am I just out of luck? I know of no schools in my state that teach architecture that accept this type of accreditation (nationally recognized.) Please, if you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. - Mark

It's not exactly a newsflash that one of the many ways that U.S.-based businesses are gaining productivity - and saving money - is through outsourcing of certain functions. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that some colleges and universities, in searching for ways to keep their own expenses down, are also looking to outsource. As parents, we should applaud any effort to reduce institutional costs, and advocate that cost-savings in the non-teaching arena be "passed on" to those of us who are "customers" of colleges and universities.

Extractions: Shy students may experience mild depression as they see their roommates and neighbors forming close relationships, while shyness prevents them from reaching out to others. Many students, especially those from small towns, find the big-city atmosphere of the Twin Cities to be enticing and exciting, and they may neglect to focus on studies.
Extractions: Credit Cards For High School And College Students While the number of credit card offers students receive may not have increased, a weak economy may be encouraging more young people to respond to the offers, according to University of Arkansas researcher Norma A. Mendoza. "We are also seeing credit card marketers targeting younger and younger populations," said Mendoza, assistant professor of marketing and logistics in the Sam M. Walton College of Business. "Students 16, 15 or younger are now able to obtain credit cards, for which their parents may be ultimately responsible." Accumulation of credit card debt by college students has become an issue nationwide. Credit cards are easy to get, and students are acquiring and using credit cards at a greater rate than ever before. An Internet search revealed dozens of sites specifically targeting college students and offering unsecured credit cards. Sponsors ranged from AT&T and Chase to MasterCard, Visa and Discover, but all encouraged college students to "start building your credit today."

Extractions: Source: High School-College Partnerships: Conceptual Models, Programs, and Issues. ERIC Digest. Awareness of high school-college partnerships has increased, especially in the higher education community, as evidenced by increased numbers of partnerships, legislative activity, publications, news reports, foundation and agency support, and conferences and panels devoted to the subject. While the roots of the (often strained) relationships between high schools and colleges go back two centuries or more, the closer collaboration required for successful partnerships is a relatively recent phenomenon. WHAT ACCOUNTS FOR THE INTEREST IN HIGH SCHOOL-COLLEGE PARTNERSHIPS? Many factors explain the burgeoning interest in collaboration including the changing student population, democratization of higher education admissions policies, students' frequent lack of skill preparedness, awareness of a need for new models of inservice staff development for high school teachers, and greater competition in college student recruitment. Additional factors include increased awareness of the need for enhanced articulation between levels of institutions by administrators, parents, and state education department officials, and an awareness that the challenges confronting contemporary secondary educationparticularly for at-risk students, women, and minoritiesrequire a community effort in which colleges have been asked to play a much larger role than previously reserved for them.

5 Tips: Retirees Going Back To School - Aug. 1, 2005 Youngsters aren t the only ones going back to school. Today more and more retirees Retirees going back to school. 5 Tips college advice for seniors. http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/01/pf/saving/willis_tips/
Extractions: NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Youngsters aren't the only ones going back to school. Today more and more retirees are putting aside their golf games and hitting the books. In today's 5 tips we'll give you some tips on how to get the most out of being an older student. 1. Learn for less Have you always had a passion for architecture or drama? It's never too late to learn. Even if you're not going after a degree, many colleges allow seniors to audit or even take classes for reduced or no tuition. The colleges recognize that they have extra space, and they might as well offer it as a benefit to seniors. Although you can actively participate in the class if you're auditing it, you don't have to take any tests! Schools are recognizing the benefit of having classes at full capacity. It's like flying a full airplane instead of a half-full one. For example, through the Senior Adult Learning Center in Oregon, seniors may audit any Portland State University class on a space-available basis without paying tuition, according to Kelly Tanabe, the author of "501 Ways for Adult Students to Pay for College." Back To School And Binge Drinking On College Campuses back to school and Binge Drinking on college Campuses 1, Issue 3. By John A. Carpenter, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Rutgers, The State University of New http://www.healthed.msu.edu/snc/binge.htm
Extractions: Board Member, ACA It is fall and students have returned to college. Because of several widely publicized incidents, one of the growing concerns on college campuses is so-called "binge drinking". As with so many other words, the term "binge" has, over a period of time, been massaged into meaning something other than its original definition. This change in meaning has created a potential source of confusion. Marc Schuckit, editor of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol, has issued a "guide" to his editorial staff, and hence to authors, in which he affirms the historical use of the term "binge". The Schuckit statement, without alteration, is provided below with his permission. Its original title is "Guidance for authors on the policy of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol regarding the appropriate use of the term binge". ACA agrees with Dr. Schuckit‰s statement on the definition of binge, and further support of his position appears in the September 1998 issue of JSA (p. 621) in a letter to the editor from Dr. Sheila B. Blume.
