Extractions: First described in 1972, mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is an autoimmune disease that encompasses symptoms of three other rheumatoid autoimmune diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma and polymyositis. Patients with this pattern illness have features of each of these three diseases. MCTD can occur at any age, with the average age of onset between the teens to the 30s. Eight out of ten patients are women. How does mixed connective tissue disease develop? The connective tissues are the structural elements that hold the cells of the body together. These tissues form a framework or matrix for the body. The connective tissues are composed of two major structural molecules: collagen and elastin. Connective tissue diseases feature abnormalities involving the collagen and elastin and are often characterized by a variety of immune abnormalities. Lab tests show that most patients diagnosed with MCTD have high levels of anti-nuclear antibodies as well as antibodies to ribonucleoprotein (anti-RNP). Because mixed connective tissue disease is up to 15 times more common among women than men, some theorize that the condition is related to hormones. I have had a terrible rash on the scalp, pubic area and in areas over the body for 7 months. Diagnosis was folliculitus. No medication has helped as yet. Last week I noticed an enlarged lymph node. My DR found many nodes on each side of my neck. Both he and the ENT DR suspect lymphoma and I will have a node biopsy in one week. Can you tell me if there is a connection to MCTD and lymphoma. My DR said he thinks this node condition is the basis for all of my symptoms. I wonder if it is both conditions or if one thing lead to another. Your answer will be greatly appreciated. Immune-mediated diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and systemic lupus erythematosus, cause much human suffering and place a major burden on the health care system. Millions of Canadians are affected and increasing numbers urge amelioration in clinical research and health care. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research ( CIHR ) Institute of Infection and Immunity ( III ) supports research to enhance immune-mediated health and to reduce the burden of disease through prevention plans, diagnosis, treatment strategies, support systems, and palliation. To facilitate discoveries and broaden current understanding, the III encourages cross-disciplinary collaborations. As such, a committee has been formed and the research workshop "Integrating Discovery Platforms in Autoimmune Diseases" organized, in order to develop a Canadian health research agenda in autoimmune diseases.
