Extractions: Officially, there is no centre of Australia. This is because there are many complex but equally valid methods that can determine possible centres of a large, irregularly-shaped area - especially one that is curved by the earth's surface. However, numerous attempts at reaching and defining Australia's centre were made during the country's early pioneering days: "Let any man lay the map of Australia before him, and regard the blank upon its surface, and then let me ask him if it would not be an honourable achievement to be the first to place foot at its centre. Men of undoubted perseverance and energy in vain had tried to work their way to that distant and shrouded spot." "Thus said Charles Sturt in November 1845, who at the age of forty-nine, and partially blind from earlier expeditionary work, left his beloved wife Charlotte and started on a third and final expedition - this time aimed straight at the heart of the continent. There, he believed he would find 'a large body of inland waters', so he equipped the expedition with a boat for sailing on this mythical sea. Instead, he discovered a sea of seemingly endless sand dunes - the

Extractions: ISBN Contents Previous Next Mark Lintermans, Environment ACT The Australian Capital Territory ( ACT ) is the smallest of Australia's States and Territories (235,600 ha) but has a diverse range of aquatic habitats ranging from small subalpine bogs to the larger riverine systems such as the Murrumbidgee River. However the geographic location and altitude of the ACT preclude some wetland types which are common in other States and the Northern Territory. For example the inland location of the ACT means that there are no marine, estuarine or brackish wetlands. Similarly, with the location of the ACT in the south-eastern highlands, large lowland floodplain systems are also absent. The first substantial review of aquatic ecosystems in the ACT was conducted by Hogg and Wicks (1989) . This review dealt mainly with lotic systems and did not attempt to cover the high altitude wetlands such as fens and bogs. Subsequently Evans and Keenan (1993) reviewed the published and unpublished literature on high altitude wetlands in the ACT The ACT is located within two biogeographic regions defined by Thackway and Cresswell (1995) as the Australian Alps, and the South Eastern Highlands, with the majority of its important wetlands being found in the Australian Alps bioregion.

Canberra tends to be hot in summer and cold in winter and, unlike some other milder Australia cities, it has four distinct seasons. In summer, while temperatures average 9 degrees overnight to 23 degrees during the day, its not uncommon to swelter in over 30-degree heat. In winter, temperatures average 3 degrees overnight to 16 degrees during the day. What makes the ACT unique?
