Extractions: New Zealand Economic and Financial Overview 2005 Contents External trade is of fundamental importance to New Zealand. Primary sector based exports and commodities remain important sources of the country's export receipts, while exports of services and manufactured products continue to increase. This, together with a reliance on imports of raw materials and capital equipment for industry, makes New Zealand strongly trade-oriented. Merchandise Trade After recording a surplus of $962 million in the year to September 2001, the annual merchandise trade balance has fallen over subsequent years to stand at a deficit of $4,080 million in the year to 30 September 2004. Export values of merchandise goods increased by 4.6% over the year to $30.0 billion. Increases in the world prices of many of New Zealand's commodity exports, particularly lamb, beef and dairy products, and increases in the volumes of exports offset the impact of the appreciation of the exchange rate to see the total value of exports higher in the year. The value of merchandise goods imports grew by 6.8% to $34.1 billion. Strong growth in import volumes more than offset lower import prices arising from the appreciation of the New Zealand dollar.

Extractions: New Zealand has a mixed, market-driven economy, largely under the control of the private sector and heavily dependent on international trade. Historically, New Zealands economy has been dominated by primary sector industries, in particular the export of agricultural produce such as dairy products, meat and wool. While agriculture is still a significant contributor to overall GDP, in recent times tourism and related industries have taken over as the largest contributor to the economy, cashing in on New Zealands international image as one of the worlds most beautiful countries. New Zealand has sizeable manufacturing and services sectors, employing in total over 85% of the workforce. Energy-based industries along with fishing, forestry, horticulture and mining have all expanded rapidly over the last decade, contributing to a movement away from pastoral agriculture as the dominant economic sector.

Right now the World Trade Organisations Doha Development Round negotiations are at a standstill Augusts European summer break has come at the end of an intense but unsuccessful bid to develop draft texts of an agreement. Some trade ministers meeting in July at Dalian, China did tentatively agree to use a compromise proposed by a group of developing countries led by Brazil and India but it was insufficient for country representatives to leave the meeting feeling in any way optimistic. At Dalian it was clear that most developing countries would not soften their position on a formula to reduce tariffs on industrial goods (wanted by developed countries). They want the United States to further reduce its domestic subsidies on agriculture and the European Union to consider what they describe as a more realistic outcome on market access in agriculture.

It seems that Yahoo can produce results for full Boolean nested searches, which Google can't do (at least not yet). Using a fairly complex search on benchmarking of computer expenditures for consumer goods industry (which a week earlier had baffled one of my smarter student groups) and it appeared to deliver results consistent with the Boolean search statement. So for search situations where you have exhausted other approaches and need to try an engine with full Boolean capabilities, Yahoo! seems to be the answer, at least for now. Archives By Brooke Galloway, Research Director, Software and Services, IDC Australia 2004 is shaping up to be a dynamic year for the Australian information technology market. IDC is observing a significant shift in attitudes as organisations move beyond the operational efficiency issues that have dominated the IT landscape for the past three years towards planned investments designed to facilitate new business strategies. Increased business confidence and a loosening of the budget belt are renewing momentum for IT projects that build the business. The key technologies IDC expects to shape the market in 2004 include: Overall business confidence in Australia is high. This comes back to a number of factors, including higher employment levels and key indicators suggesting the broader economy is strengthening. Most business leaders now expect ongoing growth in both domestic demand and Australian gross domestic product.

My ministerial colleague the Minister for Tourism and Racing Merri Rose accompanied me on the trip to promote Queensland as a tourism destination. During the visit the Minister and I announced a $300,000 Tourism Queensland marketing campaign as part of our drive to attract even more New Zealand tourists to Queensland. We also hosted a very successful tourism forum in Auckland that has generated some innovative ideas for joint marketing of the Queensland and New Zealand tourism industries to international visitors. One of the real problems confronting trans Tasman tourism is a shortage of seats in comparison with the number of New Zealanders who would like to visit Queensland. This question of access was a high priority in my discussions with New Zealand Government Ministers, including Prime Minister Helen Clark, and senior executives of Air New Zealand.

Extractions: SYDNEY Australian employers hired more workers in July, government figures showed Thursday, confirming recent signs of economic strength and supporting expectations that the central bank would not cut interest rates. Employment rose 12,700 last month and the jobless rate remained at a 29-year-low of 5 percent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. The increase in employment added to signs of a rebound in the economy, after reports in the past week showed that July retail sales had the largest gain in two years and that consumer confidence surged in August.
