Ever since New Zealand and Australia became colonies of the British Empire, there have been close links between the two countries. So close, in fact, that from 1828 until 1840 New Zealand was under the jurisdiction of the Governor of New South Wales. Movement between the two countries has also been significant, the direction depending on the economic situation in each country. During the gold rushes of the 1860s in New Zealand, for example, more Australians moved to New Zealand than vice versa. This trend continued for the next century. The 1881 Censuses both of Australia and of New Zealand, for instance, revealed that there were 16,100 Australians living in New Zealand compared with only 6,800 New Zealanders living in Australia. This net gain in favour of New Zealand continued until the 1950s.

Extractions: You are at: Home The New Zealand Advantage > Strong Economic Fundamentals New Zealand has completed more than a decade of economic restructuring, and now has a stable economy well geared for long term international competitiveness. The privatisation of utilities and state services like postage and rail services has created one of the worldâs most efficient, competition-friendly economies. A free and independent press ensures corporate and government decision-making is transparent and fair. This openness and competitiveness extends to international companies doing business in New Zealand; the country ranks third in the world in ease of cross-border transactions, according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook, 2005. The New Zealand Government is proactive in providing an environment that enables international investors to relocate, and/or collaborate with New Zealand companies. New Zealand âs close trade and legal relationship with Australia gives businesses operating from New Zealand duty free access to a population of 24 million.

Extractions: "Something deep in our culture breeds innovative cost effective solutions. New Zealand was the first country to successfully defend the America's Cup outside of the USA. Yet the technology and design solutions required to do that were achieved at a fraction of the cost of European and US competitors." Ingenuity, entrepreneurial flair and a 'can do' attitude; these are some of the characteristics that make New Zealand businesses increasingly successful internationally, particularly in areas like information and communications technology, niche manufacturing, aqua culture and creative industries such as design, fashion, film and television. But it is not simply about individual attributes - New Zealand itself is geared to business.

Extractions: 30 December 1998 New Zealand's minority National Party government fell further into disarray during December with the resignation from parliament of former Youth Affairs Minister, Deborah Morris, one of its key supporters. It now rests on a slender 61-59 majority. Morris quit in response to a government decision to purchase a squadron of secondhand F16 jet fighter planes from the US Air Force. Large scale expenditure on defence items following wholesale government cuts to social programs including welfare has provoked considerable opposition. A further recommendation by Max Bradford, the Minister of Defence, to purchase a third frigate through the joint shipbuilding program with Australia was defeated. Morris, formerly from the right-wing New Zealand First Party, claimed that she and others had been subjected to "bullying" by Prime Minister Jenny Shipley over the issue. According to Morris, Shipley constantly warned those MPs supporting the government from outside the ruling party that they could be responsible for forcing an early election if they fail to toe the National Party line.

A Structural VAR Model Of The New Zealand Business Cycle 2002 Abstract This paper develops a new open economy structural VAR model of the Key Features of new zealand business Cycles, The economic Record, http://ideas.repec.org/p/nzt/nztwps/02-26.html
Extractions: This paper develops a new open economy structural VAR model of the New Zealand economy. The model adopts techniques introduced by Cushman and Zha (1997) and Dungey and Pagan (2000) to identify international and domestic shocks and dynamic responses to these shocks in a small open economy. The international variables are block exogenous and the model includes restrictions on contemporaneous and lagged variables. Novel features include the introduction of an expanded set of domestic financial variables not captured in previous New Zealand VAR models, the use of a forward looking Taylor Rule to identify monetary policy, and the introduction of a climate variable to capture the impact of climatic conditions on the business cycle. Key results to emerge are the significant influence of international variables on the New Zealand business cycle, the importance of separately identifying import price and export price shocks, and the significant influence of climate.
