Extractions: Despite strong interest among practitioners and scholars, the study of communities of practice (CoPs) and Information Technology (IT) is short of empirical research. This paper presents a theoretical framework for communities of practice and provides alternative perspectives on IT supports for communities of practice. The framework was developed based on the literature and ethnographic case studies of communities of practice within two organizations. The study examines how people share and construct their knowledge and how they use collaborative IT to support work practices in two organizations. The surprising finding is that the groups that used IT most intensively had the least well-developed CoPs. The results of the study would inform practice and research in Knowledge Management. Introduction This paper introduces a framework for CoPs. The framework was developed based on the literature and the ethnographic case studies conducted by the first author. Second, we will discuss three kinds of knowledge and argue that some knowledge is difficult to share in electronic formats. Next, we will address the relationship between CoPs and IT. Finally, the implications of the study for further IT research will be discussed.
Extractions: Last year I wrote a short series of articles concerning legal issues that online game companies should probably know about. I concentrated on intellectual property law in that original series: I've long had other topics that I wanted to talk aboutother areas of the law that you should probably know about, and that I've learned of in my last decade of the work in the gaming field. This week I'm going to cover one of them: community law As before, I'm not a lawyer . What follows is my layman's understanding of these legal issues. COPPA stands for the Children Online Privacy Protection Act The whole law can be found here . Basically it says that online sites can't collect personal information from children under 13which can include basic contact info like an email addresswithout verifiable parental consent. It also goes further to state ways that web sites must report back to parents about what they've collected, if requested, and makes violating COPPA "a violation of a rule defining an unfair or deceptive act or practice prescribed under section 18(a)(1)(B) of the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S.C. 57a(a)(1)(B))". The immediate effect of COPPA was to send some children-oriented web sites out of business and to cause many other to institute of minimum age of 13 for participation. At the time that COPPA became a law our minimum age at Skotos was 18, which we've since reduced to 15, so we weren't directly affected. However, because of the high administrative cost of the law, tied with potential dire penalties, we've also decided to steer the safest course, and thus I can't foresee us ever dropping our age requirement at either Skotos or RPGnet under 13.

If you have a legal problem, call the Camden County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service (LRS). While the LRS does not engage in the practice of law and cannot answer legal questions, the LRS can refer you to a private attorney that is experienced in many different areas of the law including criminal, landlord/tenant relations, personal injury, estate planning, family law and consumer protection law, just to name a few. All attorneys are licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey and are in good standing with the Supreme Court of New Jersey. If you need a referral, please call (856) 964-4520 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Helpful staff will interview you over the phone to determine the nature of your legal need. You will then be given the name, address, and telephone number of an attorney who practices in your area of need. A nominal fee of not more than $30 may be charged for the first half-hour consultation. During the consultation, the attorney will discuss with you any legal issues that you may have and additional fees should retain them for additional work. No fee is charged for calling the referral service, which is a public service of the Camden County Bar Association.

Directions Attorney Grievance Overview All lawyers obligate themselves to uphold the law and abide by the Rules of Professional Conduct adopted by the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Those who violate the standards for professional conduct are subject to discipline. This is a serious matter and requires proof of misconduct to justify disciplinary action. The lawyer's action must then constitute unethical conduct before the lawyer can be disciplined. An honest disagreement about how a case should be handled or should not have been handled does not constitute misconduct, even if the outcome of the case is disappointing. Here are a few examples of prohibited conduct, which, if proven, may be cause for discipline: A lawyer cannot or will not give you money that he or she is holding on your behalf. A lawyer continually fails to respond at all to inquiries about your case, to tell you about court dates, or to appear in court.

Unlike in a criminal case, as the victim in a civil suit you initiate and control all aspects of the case. And that control starts with your selection of an attorney. Building a Strong Team Once you have decided to pursue a civil suit, it is vital that you take the time to select an attorney who will best represent your interests. While making this selection can be daunting, there are things you can do to make the process easier. One of the most critical aspects is to hire an attorney as early in the process as possible. In waiting weeks or months, witnesses become harder to find, physical evidence may be lost or damaged, and memories fade. Also, each state has a statute of limitations that establishes a certain period after which you can no longer file a civil suit.
