In the dyslexia literature, the methodology is referred to as multisensory structured language multisensory, structured, metacognitive language instruction (MSML) to address at-risk students' weaknesses in recognizing linguistic rules and structure patterns, which are necessary tools to become independent users of a foreign language. MSML involves the students in learning to access their linguistic knowledge and the instructor in facilitating metacognitive thought processes. MSML instruction is multisensory, structured, explicit, cumulative, metacognitive, highly repetitive, phonetic, alphabetic, and analytic/synthetical. Each 45- to 60-minute lesson focuses on one of the following three rule systems: phonology/orthography, grammar, or vocabulary/morphology. Extractions: NATIONAL CENTER FOR EDUCATION STATISTICS (NCES 98-094) Ordering information (Requires Internet Access) or view in PDF below. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, it aims to understand the critical junctures in the pipeline to college enrollment where at-risk high school graduates leave at substantially higher rates than their counterparts not at risk. Second, it identifies factors that contribute to at-risk students' successful navigation of the pipeline to college enrollment. Students at risk were defined as 1992 high school graduates who had risk characteristics that increased their chances of dropping out of high school. These included being from a single parent household, having an older sibling who dropped out of high school, changing schools two or more times other than the normal progression (e.g., from elementary to middle school), having C's or lower grades between sixth and eighth grades, being from a low socioeconomic status (SES) family, or repeating an earlier grade. About 58 percent of 1992 high school graduates had one or more risk factors; 32 per-cent had one risk factor, 16 percent had two, and 9 percent had three or more (table 1).

Extractions: Get Home Delivery In response to the Jan. 14 editorial, "Raising Dropout Age Won't Fix the Core Problem," we applaud The News' interest and dedication for raising the issue of high school dropouts in Detroit and across the state. Raising the high school dropout age to 18 will not resolve the predicament students and educators face. It is deeply disturbing to find that there is no apparent realization that a fix lies within a significant change of the process. The traditional public/private high school education with academics, athletics, clubs and other social activities generally works well for 50-60 percent of today's student population. However, why insist that a process that works for these students can be adequately modified to be "all things to all people"?

Sign up to receive email updates on our latest publications. The economic prospects of high school dropouts are exceedingly dim. We have studied a diverse array of dropout prevention approaches, ranging from those for at-risk youth to those designed to address the drop-out problem in clusters of schools or entire school districts. Effective strategies include focusing on instructional improvement rather than on providing student services. Millions of dollars have been spent in recent years to create special environments, called alternative schools, that focus on encouraging highly at-risk students to graduate from high school. Our analysis reveals that programs with a more academic focus seem to improve instruction, but alternative schools have had mixed success in achieving their primary objective. Although alternative school students were more likely to attend school, go to school more days, and earn more credits, after three years in these programs, only about 40 percent had graduated.
