Extractions: SUBTOPIC: History of Mineralogy OBJECTIVES: The Students are asked to: 1) construct the "five regular solids," which will be used to study the crystal system of minerals 2) through library research, write a report on mineralogy and its history 3) locate on a world map where each of the minerals (assigned during activity #2) are located or deposited 4) debate the effect mining will have on the economy and ecology of the region 5) use the five regular solids to study and identify the six crystal systems of minerals 6) identify the physical and chemical properties of minerals Background Information Humans have always been fascinated with rocks and minerals. Diamonds, gold, silver and other precious minerals are a source of wealth and power. Part of the fascination comes from the order contained in the crystalline structure of minerals. Like many scientists, Johannes Kepler, when he discovered why there were only six planets, recognized order and symmetry among the planets. He followed the Copernican system and related geometry to his idea of the six planets and the knowledge of the ancients that there are only five solids whose sides are regular polygons.
Science Blueprints TOC While writing science lesson plans, teachers are encouraged to use the lesson Sixth, astronomy Patterns and Relationships, scigr6astronomypatterns.pdf http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/curriculum/science/curr/blueprints.htm
Extractions: Science Blueprints describe the major elements of grade level units and are intended to serve as a basis for the development of lesson plans. They are presented as a collection so that it is possible to overview the entire flow of learning throughout the grades. Knowing what students have learned and will be learning provides the opportunity for more effective lesson planning and instruction. Teachers should use Blueprints as a resource for lesson planning and as an overview of the entire unit. Blueprints provide enduring understandings and essential questions that can be applied throughout a unit and within daily lessons. Prioritized indicators list the skills, processes, and concepts that are the main focus of this unit. Additional indicators may be selected for the daily lesson plans. Suggested ideas for assessment and differentiation have been included as models or to be used directly in lessons. Blueprints cannot be used in isolation, but in conjunction with a variety of curriculum documents and resources, which may include: Maryland Science Content Standards Scope and Sequence (found in the Frameworks) Lesson Planning Packets , containing: Lesson Planning Sheets, Lesson Plan Organizer, Lesson Plan Template and Well-Designed Investigation Charts available on this website.
