Gardening Information Services It's spring and the sneezing, red eyes and runny noses are with us as some 20% of Australia's population succumb to spring fever. Allergies amount to some of the worst medical problems that we face in Australia. More than one in five people suffer some sort of allergy problem, ranging from weepy eyes and a runny nose to asthma. Rightly or wrongly, many people blame plants for their woes. But are plants to blame? Often they're not, or the wrong plant is held to be the culprit. Wattle, for instance, a plant most people believe to be top of the list when it comes to allergies, rarely causes any problems at all. The biggest trigger comes from plants most people overlook: the grasses, particularly cool climate grasses. Rye grass and other pasture grasses produce copious quantities of pollen when they flower. This fills the air in spring with just the stuff to cause itchy eyes and sneezing. Joining the pollen stream are pollens from many deciduous trees. Again, the flowers that produce the pollen are often barely noticed but the pollen is designed to be carried on the wind and, once airborne, it can cause allergies. Ash, oak, liquidambar and plane trees all produce pollen that can trigger hay fever.

Extractions: There are many things that just seem to come naturally to some people. Maybe you know a girl who's a natural at sports - put her in a uniform and she's off and running. Some people are naturals at playing an instrument; it's like they were born knowing how to count in 4/4 time. Others are naturals at math; give them a test on theorems or equations and they're happy. But some people have a problem with something that you'd think would come naturally to everyone: breathing. When a person has asthma, it can make breathing very difficult. And when it's hard to breathe, it can affect a person's game, that trumpet solo, and even the all-important geometry test. What Is Asthma? Asthma (pronounced: az -muh) is a lung condition that causes a person to have difficulty breathing. Asthma is a common condition: More than 6 million kids and teens have it. Asthma affects a person's bronchial (pronounced: brahn -kee-ul) tubes, also known as airways. When a person breathes normally, air is taken in through the nose or mouth and then goes into the trachea (windpipe), passing through the bronchial tubes, into the lungs, and finally back out again. But people with asthma have airways that are inflamed. This means that they swell and produce lots of thick mucus. They are also overly sensitive, or

Extractions: Asthma (say: az -muh) is a condition that affects a person's airways, which are also called breathing tubes or bronchial (say: brong -kee-ul) tubes. These tubes lead from the windpipe, or trachea (say: tray -kee-uh), into the lungs. For most kids, breathing is simple: They breathe in through their noses or mouths and the air goes into the windpipe. From there, it travels through the airways and into the lungs. But for kids with asthma, breathing can be a lot more difficult because their airways are very sensitive. An asthma flare-up, which some people call an asthma attack, happens when a person's airways get narrower and it becomes a lot harder for air to get in and out of the lungs. Sometimes the swollen airways produce extra mucus, which makes things pretty sticky, so it's easy to see why it's hard to breathe. In between flare-ups, a kid's breathing can be totally normal or seem that way. But during a flare-up, it can feel like the person is breathing through a straw. A kid with asthma may wheeze (a whistling sound when he or she breathes), cough, and feel tightness in the chest. An asthma flare-up can get worse and worse if a kid doesn't use asthma medicine. After an asthma flare-up, the airways almost always return to the way they were before, although it can take several days. Who Gets Asthma?

Extractions: Search September 18, 2005 Registration Healthcare Professionals You are in: Asthma Asthma is a disease that affects the breathing passages of the lungs (bronchioles). Asthma is caused by chronic (ongoing, long-term) inflammation of these passages. This makes the breathing passages, or airways, of the person with asthma highly sensitive to various "triggers." This resistance to exhaling leads to the typical symptoms of an asthma attack. Because asthma causes resistance, or obstruction, to exhaled air, it is called an obstructive lung disease. The medical term for such lung conditions is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. COPD is actually a group of diseases that includes not only asthma, but also chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Like any other chronic disease, asthma is a condition you live with every day of your life. You can have an attack any time you are exposed to one of your triggers. Unlike other chronic obstructive lung diseases, asthma is reversible.
