Project Anti-Disguise A collaborative effort of national asianamerican advocacy groups and student organizations to demand the immediate recall of the Kung Fool costume manufactured and distributed by Disguise, Inc. http://petition.yellowworld.org/
Extractions: September 22, 2004 01:59 PM On Thursday, October 10, 2002, Yellowworld.org launched Project Anti-Disguise , a grass-roots campaign to raise awareness about the racist, anti-Asian costume "Kung Fool." A petition was immediately circulated to offer a mechanism by which the frustration, anger and firm resolution of the Asian community could constructively be channeled. With the generous support of the Organization of Chinese Ameicans, San Diego, Project Anti-Disguise launched a blitzkrieg-style media assault, voicing its message in television, radio, print and online coverage. Eight days and over 8,300 signatures later, Disguise the largest costume manufacturer in the world has gotten the message. "Disguise, Inc. will take steps to ensure these costumes will not be sold and sent an additional letter to retailers today requesting that they remove all 'Kung Fool' costumes from their shelves by October 18, 2002," affirmed Disguise EVP Stephen C. Stanley

Extractions: After YEARS (literally) of unsuccessfully trying to get Geocities/Yahoo to correct a system error that locked me out of my Homestead account, I've finally moved all the content from my previous Asian-American Celebrity Webpage archive to this new site, along with a much-needed cosmetic overhaul and several more biographical entries. So hopefully you'll enjoy the fruits of my HTML labor. If you see any outdated links to the old site, please let those other webmasters or me know! This non-commercial site was conceived of and designed by Richard E. Wairata Griner as a celebration of Asian- American celebrities and entertainers and the positive impact they've had on the American community (and abroad). It is my aim to present these public figures to you in a respectful, tasteful and informative manner. Please direct all questions, comments, and suggestions you might have my way ... this site is yours, too, and I'd love to have feedback while I update this website!

Extractions: This groundbreaking anthology presents us with 26 essays and fiction pieces that discuss, explicate, and exemplify the always complex, sometimes confusing, and often surprising intersections between the identities of "gay," "Asian," and"American." The essays cover topics ranging from sex to traditional family values to religion to AIDS and queer activism, and are written in a variety of styles, at turns highly personal or academic. Richard Fong's "Looking for My Penis"explores images of Asian men in gay porn; Patti Duncan's "History of a Disease" is an impressionistic, experimental autobiographical meditation on family history and being a Korean American lesbian. While the writers and their topics allconcern aspects of Asian American and gay life, the ultimate portrait that emerges from is one of a United States culture that bears little resemblance to the "America" portrayed in the media or even by contemporary history. What Eng and Hom have done is not simply give Asian American gay men and lesbians a venue for their voices but challenge how each of us imagines and conceptualizes his or her national identity, extending the anthology's importance beyondits relevance to gay or Asian studies.

Extractions: I am deeply honored to participate in this retrospective on Adrienne Rich's "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence." Approximately fifteen years ago, I enrolled in an undergraduate course entitled "Women and Difference: Marginality, Art, and Politics." Co-taught by Adrienne Rich and Michelle Cliff, the class transformed me intellectually, politically, and personally. The education that I received in this setting differed dramatically from the curriculum of my first year in college. Instead of the universalizing humanistic discourse of western civilization, a canon dominated by the great white and male thinkers of western culture, my feminist studies course focused on women "perceived as 'different' (spinsters, lesbians, women of color, Jewish women, women with disabilities, women without children)." In "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence," Rich makes two broad claims to expose heterosexuality as a normative ideology. First, she critiques feminist scholarship of the late 1970s for its largely...
