Extractions: Bon Bini! Or welcome, as they say in Aruba, to the Dutch Caribbean Island that invites the traveler in search of beautiful, white sand beaches and the ultimate surf. Aruba, located in the southern Caribbean, is one of the three ABC islands. The other two islands are Bonaire and Curacao. Aruba is located only a mere 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela and is the most southern and western of the ABCs. Aruba is unique from the other ABC islands, in that it became a separate member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986. It has diversified and developed itself greatly and has become one of the leaders in tourism amongst the Caribbean islands. Movement toward full independence was halted at Aruba's request in 1990. Oranjestad, the capital city, is the center of shopping on the island. There are hundreds of shops that offer a variety of items to choose from. The island also is home to many casinos and a variety of restaurants and also offers exciting nightlife. History Many of Arubans are from Indian decent. In 1499, Spanish explorer, Alonso de Ojeda, claimed the island for the Spanish Crown. The Spanish never colonized the desert island, as they found it useless. In 1636, the Dutch took possession of the island until losing power in 1805, when the English gained brief control. In 1816, the Dutch gained permanent control and now Aruba is a separate member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
