Extractions: AAFP Home Page Journals Vol. 60/No. 2 (August, 1999) A patient information handout on reactive arthritis, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 507. Reactive arthritis, also called Reiter's syndrome, is the most common type of inflammatory polyarthritis in young men. It is sometimes the first manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus infection. An HLA-B27 genotype is a predisposing factor in over two thirds of patients with reactive arthritis. The syndrome most frequently follows genitourinary infection with Chlamydia trachomatis , but other organisms have also been implicated. Treatment with doxycycline or its analogs sometimes shortens the course or aborts the onset of the arthritis. Reactive arthritis may also follow enteric infections with some strains of Salmonella or Shigella, but use of antibiotics in these patients has not been shown to be effective. Reactive arthritis should always be considered in young men who present with polyarthritis. Symptoms may persist for long periods and may, in some cases, cause long-term disability. Initial treatment consists of high doses of potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients with large-joint involvement may also benefit from intra-articular corticosteroid injection. (Am Fam Physician 1999;60:499-507.)
Extractions: Find Out Why They Don't Work... More than 70% of all people in the United States currently suffer from some type of arthritis. This is a staggering number that is on the rise. Every year more than 750,000 new people experience the pain and frustration that comes with arthritis. Many people don't know where to turn other than to their primary care physician. Others try using over-the-counter drugs to no avail. These are only temporary solutions that merely stop the pain for a short period of time- never treating the underlying disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. Some types can lead to blindness, deafness, paralysis and even premature death! With so many different types, it is difficult for any doctor to diagnose arthritis properly. Many times they will tell you that you simply have arthritis and to take a common over-the-counter medicine. While these medicines may delay the pain, they do not help it to go away. We would like to show you a way you can get the help you need for your arthritis. That is why we offer a FREE initial evaluation to properly diagnose the problem and offer an effective solution.

Extractions: Subscribe now >> Arthritis of the knee is most often osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease where cartilage in the joint gradually wears away. In rheumatoid arthritis, which can also affect the knees, the joint becomes inflamed and cartilage may be destroyed. Arthritis not only affects joints, it may also affect supporting structures such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Osteoarthritis may be caused by excess stress on the joint, such as from repeated injury, deformity, or if a person is overweight. It most often affects middle-aged and older people. A young person who develops osteoarthritis may have an inherited form of the disease or may have experienced continuous irritation from an unrepaired torn meniscus or other injury. Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects people at an earlier age than osteoarthritis. What Are the Signs of Knee Arthritis and How Is It Diagnosed?
Extractions: CNN (CNN) So far, Wendy Housel has undergone surgeries to replace nine of her joints both shoulders, both wrists, both hips, both knees, and her left elbow. She's had a "revision" done on her right hip. She's had two cervical spine surgeries. And she just had a cataract (the result of taking steroids to combat arthritis) removed from one eye. At 49, she knows all too well the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which afflicts more than 2 million Americans. But with more surgeries on the horizon, Housel keeps a positive attitude. "I do not call them surgeries. I call them opportunities," says Housel, who lives in Chatham, Illinois, with her elderly mother and her sister's family. "The surgeries have improved in a dramatic way the quality of my life. That's the mindset that I go into surgery with. "Surgery is just a normal part of my life," she says.

Extractions: It may begin with a swollen knuckle, a spiking fever, or an unexplainable rash. But no matter what symptoms appear, hearing the word arthritis used as a diagnosis for your child can be unexpected and confusing. Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that is characterized by swelling, heat, and pain . Nearly 300,000 children in the United States have some sort of arthritis. Arthritis can be short-term - lasting for just a few weeks or months, then going away forever - or it can be chronic and last for months or years. In rare cases, it can last a lifetime. The most prevalent form of juvenile arthritis is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis , or JRA . It affects approximately 50,000 children in the United States. What Causes Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis? The medical community doesn't know exactly what causes rheumatoid arthritis (also referred to as idiopathic arthritis) in children. Research indicates that it is an autoimmune disease. In autoimmune diseases, white blood cells lose the ability to tell the difference between the body's own healthy cells and harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses . The immune system, which is supposed to protect the body from these harmful invaders, instead releases chemicals that can damage healthy tissues and cause inflammation and pain.

Extractions: You may have heard about arthritis (say: ar- thry -tus), which is a disease that causes swelling and pain in a person's joints. But isn't it something that only old people get? Actually, kids can get a kind of arthritis called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. (It's called JRA for short and "juvenile" means young.) Kids can have many different types of arthritis, but JRA is the most common. Joints are the places where bones meet. Arthritis can prevent people from moving their joints properly. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (say: joo -vuh-nil roo -muh-toid ar- thry -tus) affects kids under age 16. These kids have arthritis in one or more joints. Many problems can cause pain and swelling of the joints, so a doctor will want to know how long these problems have been going on. To be considered JRA, a kid must have swelling and pain for at least 6 weeks. Although it has a similar name, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is not the same as the kind of arthritis that affects adults. Although some of the symptoms may be similar, JRA doesn't damage bones as quickly as the rheumatoid arthritis that affects older people. Three Kinds of JRA

Glucosamine For Arthritis Human studies have shown that either one may relieve arthritis pain and stiffnesswith fewer side effects than conventional arthritis drugs. http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/glucosamine.html
Extractions: Quackwatch Home Page Osteoarthritis (OA), the most widespread type of arthritis, is a degenerative disease of the joints. Although sometimes capable of causing acute inflammation, it is most commonly a "wear-and-tear" disease involving degeneration of joint cartilage and formation of bony spurs within various joints. Trauma to the joints, repetitive occupational usage, and obesity are risk factors. Most people over 60 years of age have this affliction to some extent, with approximately 16 million sufferers requiring medical care. The main goal of treatment is to relieve pain. In recent years, glucosamine and chondroitin have been widely promoted as a treatment for OA. Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is thought to promote the formation and repair of cartilage. Chondroitin, a carbohydrate, is a cartilage component that is thought to promote water retention and elasticity and to inhibit the enzymes that break down cartilage. Both compounds are manufactured by the body. Laboratory studies suggest that glucosamine may stimulate production of cartilage-building proteins. Other research suggests that chondroitin may inhibit production of cartilage-destroying enzymes and fight inflammation too. Glucosamine supplements are derived from shellfish shells; chondroitin supplements are generally made from cow cartilage. Human studies have shown that either one may relieve arthritis pain and stiffness with fewer side effects than conventional arthritis drugs. But two problems remain. First, there has not been enough high-quality or long-range research to determine whether their use is practical. Second, because dietary supplement manufacture is not regulated, product quality (especially of chondroitin products) is not assured.
