Web Resources This site has a section for Ask the Preschool Teacher, as well as printables This site has coloring pages and a subject list for themes, lesson plans, http://web.syr.edu/~rlittles/
Extractions: Web Resources Preschool Related Sites Sites that had a variety of theme topics listed Sites that had numerous activities within each them that were age appropriate and manageable Sites that included other links and information that would be helpful to preschool teachers http://www.perpetualpreschool.com This site has a topic list for themes as well as teaching tips, shopping, links, and resources to contact other teachers. There are also live online workshops that you can participate in for a fee. You can also search the site if you have a specific question or idea in mind. The theme section has quite a few topics and I like that within the theme the activities are divided into story books, songs, snacks, games, science, art, and miscellaneous. Within each section the ideas are fairly brief and usually fun. They are also appropriate for the age level that I teach (3-4 year olds). The ideas are dated and there is contact information for the person who submitted the idea. There is also a link to their toddler site that is set up in a similar manner but created for younger children. http://www.preschooleducation.com

Extractions: Dive into Reading Don't you just love good books? I do... As a teacher, stories are the centerpiece or focal point when it comes to lesson planning. Since I am a thematic, center-based teacher it just makes sense for me to plan my lessons around literature. If you don't teach this way, you don't know what you're missing. It's so much fun and the kids love all of the activities! I read two stories a day. I try to read something at circle time; such as a poem, weekly reader or a story. I also have a separate story time where we take a picture walk through the book, make predictions, expand our vocabularies, write responses to the book, discuss story elements and do comprehension activities. So, everyday kids are reading or being read to several times a day. When you read books during story time, this is a great opportunity to teach character development, phonemic awareness, listening skills, comprehension, science facts, history, math concepts and many other skills and concepts. Now, if you're not used to teaching this way it may seem overwhelming. But, here is how I cover all of my objectives:

Extractions: Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and hands-on approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize props or manipulatives to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.
