Extractions: Annual Giving Capital Campaign Foundation Board Home Cohn Family Rising Star Scholarship East Arkansas Community College Foundation has announced T.J. Drake of Forrest City, Arkansas as the 2004-05 recipient of the EACC Cohn Family Rising Star Scholarship. The scholarship program was created under the assumption that everyone should have the chance to realize the "American dream" and that a college education through East Arkansas Community College is an excellent first step toward achieving that goal. The scholarship essentially eliminates financial need as a barrier to participating in higher education. Drake plans to study nursing at EACC and will attend Arkansas State University after graduation from EACC. "This is a great honor to receive this scholarship and I am thankful," said Drake. The Cohn Family Rising Star Scholarship promises the youth of Forrest City that if they stay in high school, graduate, demonstrate a modest level of academic potential, and have a specific need, the scholarship will guarantee the recipient the opportunity to earn a degree or certificate from EACC. The Cohn Rising Star Scholarship covers all direct costs of an education at East Arkansas Community College for a maximum of $1,000.00 per semester, which will include tuition, all incidental fees and books for two years. Students are obligated to maintain a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or above.

Research has clearly shown that the skill and commitment of the adults in early childhood programs directly affects the quality of care and education given to children. Below are some resources to help advocates and policy makers to improve the compensation of the early childhood workforce, and thus the quality of services for children and families. Extractions: Q. Can non-profit organizations removed from the FHA Non-profit Organization Roster participate in the HOME Program? A. Non-profit organizations are important participants in HUD's efforts to further affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income persons through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) single-family programs. The special role provided for non-profit organizations in FHA regulations is intended only for those organizations that are financially viable and actively involved in the furthering of affordable housing in their communities. On June 6, 2002, HUD published a final rule establishing procedures for developing and maintaining a roster of qualified non-profit organizations, as well as for removing poorly performing non-profit organizations. Through the Office of Single-family Program Development (OSFPD), FHA maintains a Non-profit Organization Roster to provide a means for mortgagees and the general public to verify that non-profit organizations are qualified to participate in specified FHA activities. These placement and removal procedures protect participants in the FHA single-family programs and safeguard FHA insurance funds.

Extractions: Studies show that educational achievement gaps already exist at Kindergarten entry. Children from low-income families are more likely to start school with limited language skills, health problems and social and emotional problems that interfere with learning. The larger the gap at school entry, the harder it is to close. Schools can improve the readiness of young children by making connections with local child care providers and preschools by creating policies that ensure smooth transitions to kindergarten. Schools must be ready to address the diverse needs of the children and families in their community and be committed to the success of every child. Highlights of the State The School Readiness Initiative Partnership has established an outstanding coalition of state and non-profit agencies. This partnership has defined and targeted Arkansas School Readiness Indicators consisting of Ready Children, Ready Families, Ready Schools and Ready Communities. These indicators will be tracked regularly over time at state and local levels. A Getting Ready For School data report and a Kindergarten Readiness Checklist brochure have been published identifying the indicators for the state.
