Extractions: Arizona, U.S. Constitution Two one-credit-hour constitution and government courses necessary to meet Arizona teacher certification requirements are now available through Northland Pioneer College over the Internet. Tuition for each class is just for in-state residents, or for out-of-state students, plus a course fee. You can register online, or by phone if paying fees with a VISA or MasterCard, by calling (800) 266-7845. NPC Political Science Instructor John Deaton has been teaching the Arizona Constitution class for 26 years. "This online course is unbelievably rich in information," he said. "There is no way to present all of this data in a traditional two-day class. Students can complete just the required sections, or go off and explore other areas of personal interest. We are providing links to many state agencies for real-time data downloads," Deaton added. Deaton used the same pattern for the U.S. Constitution course.

If the two-year pilot succeeds, traditional public high school students may find more non-traditional teachers in their classrooms. Arizona has explored alternative methods before. This is the first attempt under state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. Under the pilot program, called Alternative Secondary Path to Certification, candidates who hold bachelor's degrees in non-teaching fields can land in classrooms as full-time paid teachers after intensive summer training.
Extractions: The Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students is a collaborative effort of: American Historical Association Organization of American Historians s A central goal of this project was to develop a snapshot of precollegiate history education in the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Hired by the Organization of American Historians as the lead researcher for this OAH/AHA project, Sarah Drake Brown requested information in the following categories: certification requirements for history teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels standards in history for teachers standards in history for the K-12 curriculum high school graduation requirements and exit examination requirements in history state criterion-referenced examinations in history statewide resources for history teachers and contact information for state history/social studies specialists statewide associations for teacher membership This proved to be a massive amount of data, so the information was collected in separate steps: independent searches for data, preliminary public presentations of initial findings, and early contact with numerous representatives in history education from each of the states and the District of Columbia. Preliminary data was then collected from the web sites created and maintained by the various departments of education and certifying bodies in each of the states. This information was then compiled into reports for each state, organized into sections based on the categories listed above.

Extractions: Help Wanted: One Million+ Good Women and Men Jim Veitch, Pi-Kuei Tu, Renee Franklin, and John Pendergrass The United States will have to replace up to 2 million of its current 2.7 million teachers during the next 10 years (U.S. Department of Education, 1998). New York City will need 30,000 teachers within the next five years, Maryland will need 11,000 within the next two years (Bradley, 1998), and North Carolina will need up to 70,000 within 10 years. A number of factors combine to create teacher shortages. Too few people are entering teaching. Too many leave. Demographics and state policy decisions contribute to shortages. Teachers now have more career options than ever before. Better salaries in other professions are luring people away from teaching (U.S. Department of Education, 1998; Feldman, 1998). Many teachers have reached retirement age, and almost one-third of teachers has taught for more than 20 years. Close to one million teachers are on the verge of retiring (Riley, 1998). Student enrollments are increasing. Legislators and parents are demanding

Extractions: Enrollment By State The number of students in charter schools varied greatly across the 24 states with operating charter schools in the 1997-98 school year ranging from fewer than 100 students in Kansas to more than 50,000 students in California. Regardless of the size of the state's student population, charter schools continued to enroll a small percentage of public school students. During the 1997-98 school year, our data show that charter school enrollment totaled 162,130 in 678 of the 717 open charter schools. This enrollment was 0.6 percent of the students in public schools (in 1996-97) in the 24 charter states that had operating charter schools. Arizona, the state with the second highest number of charter school students, had an estimated 25,128 students enrolled in charter schools. This enrollment was more than three percent of the state's public school enrollment, which makes Arizona the state with the highest percentage of public school students enrolled in charter schools. Charter school enrollment in the remaining states (omitting Arizona) ranged from less than 0.1 percent to 1.6 percent of public school enrollment.
