"I want this to be a personable school," Dillard said. "One where kids feel connected." Making large high schools feel small, intimate and personable is the latest trend in high school education, where enrollment can top 2,500 students. For decades, high schools have been departmentalized, run like small colleges. Teachers weren't expected to find out why a kid didn't turn in his paper; they only knew that he didn't. Now, high schools are being divided into "houses" or "schools within a school." Throughout the Valley, incoming freshmen are being given the royal treatment at orientations, and some schools are asking upperclassmen to be a buddy, mentor and tutor to underclassmen.

The AIRC provides adapted materials to its student clientele to help facilitate learning in the classroom, whether it be braille or large print text- and workbooks, recreational reading materials, or other adapted instructional materials and equipment, such as maps, rulers, games, braille writers, special paper, to name a few. More I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. -Thomas Jefferson Op-Eds Studies Press Room Events At the Goldwater Institute, educational freedom is paramount. We believe that a market-based education system is necessary to safeguard liberty, and that it is the fundamental right and responsibility of a free people to secure and direct their children's educations. Now more than ever, the need to exercise that right is great. Despite endless increases in spending and countless reforms, student achievement declines. Under the current system, the state assigns children to schools, bureaucrats pick textbooks, arbitrary standards drive curriculum and the establishment passes the buck when students fail. The solution? School choice.
