Extractions: Submitted by Teri Metros, Arizona Representative AzLA Tucson Conference a Success Breaking with a 15 year tradition, the 2005 Arizona Library Association annual conference was held in Tucson in December. Attendance at the conference was comparable to the Phoenix location and attendees enjoyed the resort atmosphere provided by the Hilton El Conquistador. Keynote speakers included library action figure model and Booklust author, Nancy Pearl, and Dr. Robert Martin, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. New Association Officers New AzLA officers were installed at the conclusion of the annual conference. Joining President Laura Thomas Sullivan on the executive board are the following individuals who were elected to office: President-Elect, Deborah Tasnadi, Peoria Public Library; Secretary, Louisa Aiken, Scottsdale Public Library System; Southern Regional Representative, Susan Evans, Yuma County Library District; Northern Regional Representative, Mary Roberts, Mohave County Library District; and ALA Councilor, David Gunckle, Sierra Vista Public Library. AzLA Legislative Agenda AzLA's annual Legislative Day was held on February 25, 2005 at the Arizona State Capitol. Arizona librarians and library users met in the morning to review the Association's legislative agenda and were provided with talking points to be used during individual meetings with their local legislators. Working with the Association's lobbyist, Robert Voss, AzLA has developed the following legislative agenda for 2005:

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) GIS literacy project, initiated in 1992, is widely regarded as the impetus for the spread of GIS-related services in academic libraries. Libraries have utilized a wide range of approaches, from setting up single dedicated GIS workstations to establishing GIS labs and creating positions for a GIS specialist. Taking the idea of GIS services one step further, the University of Arizona Libraries has created the Arizona Electronic Atlas an innovative, web-based interactive mapping resource that allows users to create, manipulate and download accurate and current maps and data. This paper describes the background and development of the Atlas, as well as its reference and instructional applications. GIS (Geographical Information Systems) technology is an innovation that has evolved rapidly from its beginnings in the 1960s. It allows users to view, manipulate, analyze and display geospatially-referenced data in graphic form (typically maps). GIS requires hardware, software, and data, as well as training on the part of the user. (

Extractions: In 1993, the University of Arizona Library restructured into teams to become a more customer-focused learning organization. We are currently using LibQUAL+ TM as a tool to listen to customers and understand their expectations. We would like to share how we have utilized our results from the spring 2000 and 2001 surveys and some of the barriers encountered in doing so. Background The University of Arizona Library has 11 functional teams responsible for services to specific or general customer groups; each team is charged with assessing needs and evaluating current services. The first of the 11 teams to use LibQUAL+ TM data in setting performance measures was the Strategic Long Range Planning (SLRP) Team. This team is responsible for overall library planning, including establishing goals and multi-year performance measures for the library. SLRP also allocates money to strategic projects. An important component of the strategic planning process is data collection that includes the Current Situation Analysis, a local effort to describe the current and future situation of the library. The Current Situation Analysis consists of an environmental scan identifying opportunities for and threats to the library and an internal assessment recognizing the library's strengths and weaknesses. Journal of Insect Science (JIS) is the first SPARC partner journal to be published by a university library. JIS is accessible online at: http://www.insectscience.org The Journal of Insect Science debuted in March 2001. SPARC, an alliance of libraries that supports economical alternatives to high-priced journals, will help enlist library support for the journal. "As a faculty member at the University of Arizona, I've been involved in an ongoing dialogue with the library about ways the faculty and the library can work together to our mutual benefit," said Henry Hagedorn, editor of the Journal of Insect Science. "The University of Arizona Library was an early SPARC supporter and is very aware of the need for low-cost alternative journals in the scientific marketplace. It was ready to make the leap to becoming a publisher, and the collaboration creates a model that other editors and editorial boards can follow."
