Formerly the Arizona Mining Association's educational program, the organization is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation whose mission is to promote understanding about natural resources and related industries by providing Arizona's K-12 teachers real-world, hands-on professional development opportunities that focus on the importance of Arizona's natural resources. Teachers have also participated in study tours emphasizing agriculture, water, and the connection of geology to reforestation on the Mollogon Rim. In late June the Foundation staff and over a dozen natural resource organizations and businesses facilitated a brand-new event, the Arizona Studies Academy, at Northern Arizona University. Educators working as teams studied agriculture, built environments, forestry, mining, natural environments, and utilities and then developed classroom plans and projects using their new knowledge. The Foundation finished its summer with the very popular Copper Connections experience in central Phoenix in late July. This weeklong event that focuses on Arizona's geology, its mineral wealth and the importance of the state's mining industry, has become one of the hallmarks of the Foundation's educational program. Said participant, Christine Bailey, Sonoma Ranch Elementary School librarian, "The amount of information dispensed and the knowledge imparted to us was tremendous. I'm encouraged and ready to get back to work." The professional development experience has been attended by over 1,600 teachers since 1994.
