Extractions: MII's Mission The Mineral Information Institute (MII) is a national 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about the science of minerals and other natural resources, and about their importance in our every day lives. Each year MII works with interested professional and scientific associations, and various government and education agencies, to help classroom teachers develop materials that are directly usable by teachers in a variety of subjects and a multitude of grade levels. All programs require updating and maintenance to ensure their continuing value and use in the classroom. MII will provide that and will distribute those programs that merit continued use. Supported by corporations, foundations, scientific associations, and individuals from across the nation, MII distributes these materials free to classroom teachers to supplement existing curricula. More than 29,000 K-12 classroom teachers in all 50 states, several Canadian provinces, and foreign countries receive teaching materials each year from MII. MII is supported solely by donations. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions." "Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Budget, Finance, And Fundraising School developers should consult with their state education agency and other fiscal The arizona Stimulus Fund and the California Revolving Loan Fund are http://www.uscharterschools.org/pub/uscs_docs/r/budget.htm
Extractions: The financial autonomy of charter schools depends on each state's charter school legislation. In states that regard charter schools as schools within a district (also known as local educational agencies [LEAs]), the charter schools' fiscal responsibilities are similar to those of the other schools in the district. In states that treat charter schools as independent school districts/LEAs, charter schools have the same fiscal responsibility and autonomy as other independent districts/LEAs. Although all charter schools, regardless of status, must develop sound financial management practices, it is especially important that charter schools established as independent LEAs be able to address a full range of fiscal management issues. Since proper accounting for the use of local, state, and federal funds is a critical element in operating and maintaining continued support for a charter school, the budget plans that charter schools develop must ensure that public funds are used properly, reflect the charter school's purpose and philosophy, and stand up to a financial audit.

Order Information By Debra Hauser, MPH, Vice President, Advocates for Youth Since 1991, rates of teenage pregnancy and birth have declined significantly in the United States. These are welcome trends. Yet, teens in the United States continue to suffer from the highest birth rate and one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the industrialized world. Debate over the best way to help teens avoid, or reduce, their sexual risk-taking behavior has polarized many youth-serving professionals. On one side are those that support comprehensive sex education—education that promotes abstinence but includes information about contraception and condoms to build young people's knowledge, attitudes and skills for when they do become sexually active. On the other side are those that favor abstinence-only-until-marriage—programs that promote "abstinence from sexual activity outside marriage as the expected standard"[ ] of behavior. Proponents of abstinence-only programs believe that providing information about the health benefits of condoms or contraception contradicts their message of abstinence-only and undermines its impact. As such, abstinence-only programs provide no information about contraception beyond failure rates.

The association's purpose is to promote the development and application of distance learning for education and training. The constituents we serve include Pre-K through grade 12 education, higher education, home school education, continuing education, corporate training, military and government training, and telemedicine. The association has become the leading source of information and recommendations for government agencies, Congress, industry and those entering into the development of distance learning programs for the State of Arizona and we will continue to grow in our delivery of this information to all entities across the state. Providing courses and electronic field trips are among the principal applications for distance learning in Pre-K through grade 12 education. Distance learning is also used to support rural and inner city classes with student enrichment, student courses, staff development and in-service training for teachers and administrators. Further, distance learning is used to share classes among schools for those areas who may not be able to find good teachers to teach honors courses like math and science. Distance learning provides a way to share those types of classes and employ one instructor.
Extractions: ISSUE: In the decade since the first charter school opened, an incredibly diverse array of charter schools have opened their doors to an equally diverse mix of instructional models, students, and staff. Stories of success, failure, struggle, and achievement have surfaced in this effort to improve public education. Tracking the true measure of their success will continue well into the new millennium, but there is no doubt that the dynamic debate they ignite has already had enormous impact in the educational arena. The pros and cons of charter schools have opened a dialogue, which in itself is impacting, energizing, and informing school improvement research, policy, and practice. This Critical Issue looks at that dynamic. This Critical Issue also puts charter school development in an historic as well as legislative context, posits three ongoing themes that permeate the ongoing debate surrounding charter schools, and delineates common traits among successful charter schools. The belief that education is failing many of our children has led to an exhaustive array of initiatives, movements, and mandates designed to improve educational offerings. All of these initiatives have taken place within the context of the traditional public school structure operated by federal, state, and local governing bodies.
