Publisher's Full Text Link Archaea (archaebacteria) constitute one of the three major evolutionary lineages of life on Earth. Previously these prokaryotes were thought to predominate in only a few unusual and disparate niches, characterized by hypersaline, extremely hot, or strictly anoxic conditions. Recently, novel (uncultivated) phylotypes of Archaea have been detected in coastal and subsurface marine waters, but their abundance, distribution, physiology and ecology remain largely undescribed. Here we report exceptionally high archaeal abundance in frigid marine surface waters of Antarctica. Pelagic Archaea constituted up to 34% of the prokaryotic biomass in coastal Antarctic surface waters, and they were also abundant in a variety of other cold, pelagic marine environments. Because they can make up a significant fraction of picoplankton biomass in the vast habitats encompassed by cold and deep marine waters, these pelagic Archaea represent an unexpectedly abundant component of the Earth's biota.

Extractions: References The risks associated with climate change lie in the interaction of several systems with many variables that must be collectively considered. Agriculture (including crop agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and fisheries) can be defined as one of the systems, and climate the other. If these systems are treated independently, this would lead to an approach which is too fragmentary. The issue is more global. It is now held as likely that human activities can affect climate, one of the components of the environment. Climate in turn affects agriculture, the source of all food consumed by human beings and domestic animals. It must be further considered that not only climate may be changing, but that human societies and agriculture develop trends and constraints of their own which climate change impact studies must take into consideration. An expert meeting held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 7 to 10 December 1993 considered the direct effects of changing hydrological, pedological and plant physiological processes on agricultural production and concentrated on mechanisms. This introductory chapter of its Proceedings looks beyond the technical aspects of agriculture and stresses some of the major goals of FAO.

Other Interests I have worked for 30 years on the environmental chemistry of trace metals, biogeochemical cycling in forests, atmosphere/surface exchange processes, development of environmental measurement methods, and the global mercury cycle. Current research programs include development of micrometeorological and chamber flux methods for quantifying air/surface exchange rates of air toxics from natural sources ( wetlands forests lakes background and geologically enriched soils ), and industrial sources ( chlorine production and other non-combustion sources municipal landfill operations mining ), and for measuring atmospheric and aquatic speciation, with emphasis on mercury. We are collaborating in an international whole-ecosystem manipulation study using stable mercury isotopes to determine the link between atmospheric deposition and Hg in biota. We are also involved in studies to develop landscape-scale estimates of atmospheric deposition of nutrients and pollutants to montane ecosystems in complex terrain .
