Extractions: The oldest buildings date back to the 17th century. These are the stone buildings of Solikamsk- the Troitsky (Trinity) Cathedral, the Preobrazhenskaya (Transfomation) Church, the Bogoyavlenskaya Church, the Voievoda's House, stone churches of the Pyanteg and Verkhny-Chusovskye Gorodki villages. The Bogoroditskaya Church (Our Lady Church) of the Tokhtaryovo village, the Suksun District, is a real masterpiece of wooden architecture and can now be seen in the Open-ari Ethnography Museum of Khokhlovka. The 18th century opened up a new page of the Urals history with the beginning of copper and iron works in the area. Some of them (the Suksunsky, Bisersky, Teplogorsky, Lysvensky, Arkhangelo-Pashysky works) have survived as a monument of the industrial architecture of the time. These sites include the dams, office buildings, forgeries, production premises. Most notable for their beauty are the architectural sites of Usolye and Ilinskoye which were commissioned by the Ural manufacturers ( e.g. the Stroganovs mansion and Spasso-Preobrazhensky Church in Usolye, etc.). The 18th century architecture features many churches : the superb wooden Preobrazhenskaya (Transformation) Church in the village of Yanidor, Cherdyn district; the Pertopavlovsky (Peter and Paul) Cathedral, the first stone building of Perm City; the Voskresensky (Ascension) Cathedral and the Uspenskaya ( Assumption) Church in Cherdyn; the Uspensky (Assumption) Church in Osa; John the Precursor Church in Solikamsk; the Nikolskaya Church in Nyrob, etc.

L arge-scale dam projects are now recognized widely as an environmentally and economically costly way of water resource management, flood control and power generation. Beyond the immediate ecological impacts, large dams often raise questions of economic rationality, technical design and development policy. We have learned from the existing research that the proposed Meinung Dam contains numerous flaws in terms of technical design, projection of economic benefit, planning process, and concerns for sustainability and environmental justice. T he main concerns include (1) geological unsuitability, (2) safety threats to nearby residents, (3) violation of environmental justice and threat to cultural heritage, (4) species extinction and biodiversity loss, (5) threats to regional water quality and groundwater recharge, (6) short life span of dam and disproportional cost, (7) over-estimate of water demand, (8) lack of assessment for alternatives to dam, (9) increased heavy industrial development and CO2 emission, (10) inadequate environmental impact assessment, and (11) local and regional opposition. T here are alternatives to the construction of dam in addressing the problems of water demand and water resource management. The alternatives currently proposed by the local governments in southern Taiwan, including groundwater recharge, water conservation measures and installation of sewage treatment plants, are viable alternatives to the costly construction of the dam to improve quantity and quality of water supply. We urge you to consider these alternatives. Taiwan with its economic resources and technical capacity can do better to promote a more sustainable way of water resource management and economic development. The long-term environmental, social and economic cost of Meinung Dam outweighs its short-term economic benefit. The building of Meinung Dam is a wrong direction for Taiwan.

The secret to the elimination of programming in iBOLT 2.0 is something called Directly Accessible Methods (DAM), which, Magic says, allows integration architects to plug components together from the comfort of a graphical interface. The company also announced its most recent financial results and a new partnership with SAP Getting enterprise applications on different platforms to talk to each other has never been easy. Lots of money has been spent on proprietary message brokering middleware systems and $100-an-hour consultants to invasively code integration into source and target platforms. With the advent of XML and Web services standards, traditional EAI is making way for a new class of plug-and-play integration techniques and integration products. Magic Software's iBOLT can be considered as a bridge between old world EAI and the new world of integration through Web services. Since it launched, in early 2003, the software has worked by basically implementing a new integration architecture that links existing systems. The iBOLT Studio suite's graphical design tools are intended to allow non-technical "integration architects" to map existing business processes running on iSeries, Unix, Linux, and Windows systems, and then define how those business processes will flow together under the new architecture. Then, at runtime, the software creates the executables (iBOLT Server) needed to link these processes into a new composite application, and watches (iBOLT Monitor) how well they're working on the different platforms.

Extractions: Natural Attractions - NEPEAN DAM If you have followed the list of the dams on our Natural Attractions pages, you have arrived at the fourth and last of the great engineering masterpieces of the Upper Nepean river system - the Nepean Dam. Completed in 1935, it is smaller than the other great dams, but an integral link in the water catchment area which supplies the city of Sydney and the Illawarra area. Both the dam itself and the tourist's picnic and lookout areas are on a more modest scale than the other dams, but the Nepean has a special quality of its own which makes it as an interesting place to visit, or to take the family. Easily accessible. The Nepean is the most easily accessible of the dams, being just a kilometre or so off the freeway, and a few kilometres from Bargo. The entrance road and park-like picnic areas have the same well-kept and neat appearance as the other tourist attractions. Its made of poured concrete and resembles a fantastic medieval fortress more than a factory. The walls crawl around the rocky edge of the island and seem to bend and poke out where ever a tank or process demanded it. The steam plant is in two parts. The oldest part is south behind the security office. In front of this older part is the concrete base remaining from the original 175 foot high smokestack. It was built in 1905-06 to generate steam for use in the fine paper and newsprint operation J.R. Booth decided to set up at the age of 77. It used to house 13 Babcox and Wilcox -type straight-tube boilers. The current E.B. Eddy steam plant is just in front of it . The most interesting part of this brick building is the de-watered channel beside it on the south. This channel, now obstructed by trees and bushes, used to be filled with water from the Buchanan channel across the road which ran the water wheels which worked the mill. Behind the pulp mill from top of the bulkhead at the end of the channel one can see the various deflectors and chutes with which the water was controlled. A nice view of O.H. Power House #4 is also available from behind it. 04 Booth Office/Bureau Booth (1900) 06 Booth Stores and Blacksmith Shop/Magasins et forge Booth (1900) These three buildings were built to replace others destroyed in the great fire of 1900. The careful observer can see the old stone foundations from the pre-fire buildings that were reused as the foundation for the current red brick walls.
