    Extractions: The villagers of Castle Rock Pueblo constructed a substantial number of buildings. All structures observed at the site were built of sandstone masonry. Remnants of buildings were found around the base of Castle Rock butte, on top of at least one large boulder, on a ledge midway up the north face of the butte, and on top of the butte. I estimate that at least 16 kivas , 40 rooms, nine possible towers, a D-shaped enclosure, two dams and associated reservoirs, two possible plazas , and numerous enclosing and retaining walls were constructed. Archaeologists study architectural remains in order to learn what types of buildings were constructed, how the different buildings were used, and how many people lived at a site (see " Population Estimates "). In this section, I discuss the types and uses of various buildings observed at Castle Rock, including rooms, kivas, towers, public architecture, and defensive architecture. In " Settlement Organization ", I discuss how the village and the people who lived in it were organized.

    Extractions: The data generated as a result of Crow Canyon's excavations at Yellow Jacket Pueblo (Site 5MT5) indicate that the site was inhabited for approximately 220 years (see " Chronology "). During that time, a wide variety of structures were built, including residential, ceremonial, and public; these include both single- and multiple-story constructions, as well as above- and belowground structures. Numerous extramural features, such as retaining walls, were also constructed, and areas of open space might have served as outdoor public places. Detailed descriptions, maps, and photographs of the structures and outdoor use surfaces exposed during testing are contained in The Yellow Jacket Pueblo Database as are numerous interpretations regarding chronology, function, and abandonment processes at the level of the individual study unit. This chapter describes and interprets remains by architectural block and for the site as a whole; it includes observations about unexcavated structures that were viewed only on the modern ground surface, as well as observations about structures exposed during excavation. At Crow Canyon, we define an architectural block as a roomblock with its associated kivas, midden areas, and outdoor surfaces and features. At Yellow Jacket Pueblo, the exceptions to this definition are the probable great kiva (Block 1800) and the possible reservoir in the south-central portion of the site (Block 2000) (

Jurors cited the innovative ceiling drop, corporate appearance, and the "remarkable" before and after transformation. along with staff from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the U.S. Air Force. Under contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation, HDC staff completed the fieldwork portion of the Phase III Data Recovery project at the Possum Hollow Site (33CT645) in Clermont County, Ohio, this summer. The Phase II and Phase III investigations have revealed that subsurface cultural deposits at the site consist of pit features buried by thick alluvial deposits. This alluvial deposition has protected the cultural deposits from modern agricultural practices. The majority of the features investigated during the Phase III are tightly clustered in the north central part of the site and primarily contain thermally altered limestone cobbles and thick grit-tempered pottery sherds. Radiocarbon dates obtained from features identified during the Phase II assessment testing place at least one occupation at the site within the Early Woodland Period and support an Early Woodland affiliation for the pottery assemblage.

According to a classification suggested by Zaki Mohammad Hossain, the fourth period of Iranian architecture (from 15 through 17 Centuries) is the most brilliant period. Various structures such as mosques, mausoleums, bazaars, bridges, and different palaces have mainly survived from this period. In the old Iranian architecture, semi-circular and oval-shaped vaults appeared and Iranians showed their extraordinary skill in making massive domes. Domes can be seen mainly in the structure of bazaars and mosques, and particularly in the historic buildings of Isfahan. Iranian domes are distinguished for their height, proportion of elements, beauty of form, and roundness of the dome stem. The outer surfaces of the domes are mostly mosaic faced, and create a magical view.

Wilkinson and McGuire Gibson In order to provide well-dated pottery types for use in dating the sites found during survey, soundings were made in three sites in the 1998 field season. These small excavations were conducted by McGuire Gibson, with the help of Krista Lewis and Jason Ur, and were in the sites of Ribat `Amran and Karraib. At Ribat `Amran (DS 226) the east section of a large bulldozer pit was cleaned and partly excavated to expose the foundations of massive Himyarite period buildings ( figs. 2 ). The foundations cut through horizontal layers that included an ancient soil of the Neolithic period on top of which was a Neolithic hearth with associated obsidian chipped stone tools. There then followed between about 1500 and BC, the accumulation of cultural deposits on the edge of the settlement, which were then followed by the construction of massive stone foundations of walls dating to the Himyarite period (ca. first century BC to fifth century ad in this case). As a result of the radiocarbon dating program we can now see that occupation at Ribat `Amran continued intermittently from the Neolithic period (fourth millennium BC), through the Iron Age, and into late Himyarite times.     Extractions: The siting of houses around the lake have a formational interdependence but each individual site having features particular to itself gives rise to subtle transformations in the design and its relationships to the ground. After lengthy deliberations and brainstorming together with Patrick Watson, the landscape architect, the idea of extending the wetland area became an integral part of the house designs which are situated on the upper shelf above the waters edge of the dam. This would allow each individual house to become an integral part of the natural setting. Civil engineers were consulted and the intention is to develop a water conservation plan of mini retention dams that would gravity feed by rainwater collected from the roofs in exposed furrows flowing into the mini dams and eventually back into the existing dams. The form of the architecture draws its inspiration from the poetry in the landscape and its expression is a spirited affirmation of it. The structure seeks out a site in which to become embedded and interconnected. A fold or crevice in the ground in which to anchor a spine rock wall that becomes the first act of intervention. Then zig zag concrete buttress walls mark out the footprint of habitation - while deep timber box-beams span the spaces between rock spine and concrete buttresses to create the living environment. The partially enclosed outdoor space that is formed by the house and trellis structure becomes the “water hole” and recreation place.
