Extractions: The National Outdoors on Sunday was a complete disaster . Had to give up half way through. The part of the line I was on was completely uneven, with the result that my left foot was in a hole, meaning it was around 2 inches lower than my right. Needless to say it completely shagged up my stance, if I tried a square stance the string started murdering my bowarm, and if I put my foot in the hole with my usual open stance, the base of my spine started to really hurt thanks to the awkward angle. There were no spare bays to shoot in, and the judge(special no thanks to him for the lack of understanding) would not let me take a half step *backwards* to get my feet on a flat piece of grass. Now I remember why IAAA shoots are not worth the hassle, at all. Friday, 26-08-2005, 19:20:24

Extractions: Table of Contents The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.
Extractions: South Korea's triple gold medal winner Mi-Jin Yun trains in Athens The earliest records of archery date back as far as the ancient Egyptians 5,000 years ago, when it was used for hunting and warfare. Many ancient cultures regarded archery as an art, much like music or poetry, and it figures repeatedly in Roman and Greek mythology. It was also used by Native Americans and throughout Asia, as well as by Attila the Hun in his conquest of much of Europe and Asia. Academy: Get in on teh archery action In time, archery became a popular leisure pursuit and England's King Henry VIII founded the first club - the Brotherhood of St. George - in 1537. The first recorded contest of recent times was in London in 1583, and the first international competition was held between English and French archers in 1900. It was in the same year that archery became an Olympic sport, featuring every year until 1920, with the exception of Stockholm in 1912.

Exhausted, relieved Cathy sitting cross-legged on the track as the enormity of her achievement in winning in the 400metres begins to hit home. With just four days to go, it is not difficult to draw up the shortlist from which Australians will ultimately choose their most enduring image, their single memorable moment, from the Games of the XXVII Olympiad. The miraculous performance or the unforeseen misfortune that could still eclipse the extraordinary Ms Freeman from the minds of Australians can scarcely be imagined. But more than 100years of Olympic history shows that the judgment of the world - or of other individual nations - may be very different from that of the host. Back in 1896 when the modern Games were inaugurated in Athens, selection was simpler because the choice was much narrower. The embryonic Olympics were a decidedly parochial event drawing a mere 311athletes - all of them male - from just 13countries. Indeed, all but 81 were Greek.
Why Losers Are The Real Winners - Olympic Info : Olympic History - olympic fans, ask yourself this why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorievavault with Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself. http://smh.com.au/olympics/articles/2004/06/18/1089484305112.html
Extractions: September 30, 2000 Olympic fans, ask yourself this: why did you enjoy watching Tatiana Grigorieva vault with the pole? No, besides that. Could it be the same reason you enjoyed watching Jai Taurima in the long jump? Michelle Ferris in the cycling? The little-known Justin Norris in the swimming pool? Perhaps it could. The real reason (okay, the other reason) you loved watching Grigorieva in the pole vault is that she jumped a personal best. Put aside her obvious beauty (and the way she silenced 110,000 sports fans by placing a manicured finger to bee-stung lips). Put aside the silver medal (and the email called The Silver Medallist that is doing the rounds). What, really, is the sporting point? It is that Grigorieva did better than she had ever done before. Sure, American Stacy Dragila went higher and broke a world record. Bully for her. Grigorieva was also making history. Her own history. She jumped 4.55 metres and stunned herself.
