The target consists of ten coloured concentric circles known as âringsâ. An arrow in the innermost circle (the âbullâs eyeâ) is worth ten points, and an arrow in the outermost circle (the âouterâ) counts for one. An arrow landing successfully in a ring between these two is worth from two to nine points, depending which one it is.

Hwang Young-cho - Marathon 1992 Barcelona Olympics The 1996 Barcelona Olympics are unforgettable for South Koreans in two ways. First, it was the only Games where the first and the last gold medal went to South Korea, and second, it was South Korea¡¯s Hwang Young-cho who won the last gold medal of the Olympics in marathon to cap the greatest finish ever in our Olympic history. The first Korean to win a gold medal at the Olympics was Sohn Ki-chung at the 1936 Berlin Games but he ran under the flag of Japan as Korea was under its colonial power. While it is definitely something to be proud of it also left Koreans feeling like something was missing and many yearned for another marathoner to top the podium to relieve Sohn¡¯s grief. It was finally accomplished at Montjuic Stadium after a 56-year wait. The race itself was a thriller. Hwang, who was running just his just fourth full-course marathon at Barcelona, raced neck-and-neck with Japan¡¯s Koichi Morishita for the lead before the 40-kilometer point.

Truth be known, Britain was the only nation to field any female archers at that Games. Nonetheless, the hearts of Robin Hood and his Merry Men would surely have swelled with pride. For in a sport that has held competitions since medieval times and whose basic principles remain the same despite the advance of technology, the outlaw who lived in Sherwood Forest in the 12th Century is still honoured; a "Robin Hood" in the modern sport represents the splitting of the shaft of an arrow already in the target by another arrow, supposedly in recognition of the legendary Mr Hood's ability to do just that. The bow and arrow was used for hunting and as a weapon of war long before Robin Hood championed the poor in their struggle against the tax demands of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Their first recorded use appears in ancient Egyptian drawings that date back 5,000 years, though historians estimate that the invention of the bow and arrow goes back 25,000 years.
