Extractions: Olympic History From prehistoric times, the bow was a principal weapon of war and of the hunt throughout the world, except in Australia. Some authorities date the origin of archery as early as the Aurignacian period, about 25,000 years before the modern era. The earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted the weapon at least 5000 years ago. In the time of the earliest pharaohs, the Egyptians practiced archery in hunting, as well as in warfare against the ancient Persians, who were then equipped only with spears and slingshots. Recreational archery was also practiced, among the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, one instance of the latter being the competition in which Odysseus won the hand of Penelope. Soon after, however, the bow and arrow was used extensively in the ancient world. The Assyrians and Babylonians depended on the weapon, and the Old Testament refers several times to archery as a characteristic skill of the ancient Hebrews. A.D. Military Usage

Extractions: RULES IN BRIEF Archers must stand to shoot, according to the rule book. However, there have been two famous exceptions: Neroli Fairhall, a New Zealander paralysed from the waist down, made history by shooting from a wheelchair in 1984, while Paola Fantato, an Italian who was disabled by polio, repeated that stirring feat at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Archers may wear protective equipment such as finger protectors, a glove on the bow hand and glasses. They must not wear anything that can be construed as giving them an advantage. Archers may use their own bows and arrows, providing they conform to certain specifications: Bows must weigh more than 22 kilograms for men's competition, more than 15kg for women's. Most strings are made of a hydrocarbon product, while some still are made of kevlar, the material used to make bulletproof vests. Arrows must have a maximum diameter of 11mm. Each arrow must be marked with the competitor's name or initials, while archers use distinctive colours and patterns on the arrow fletching to distinguish their arrows. An arrow is counted as a shot if it goes beyond the reach of the archer. If an arrow falls within the archer's reach, it may be shot again.

The exact type of competition depended on the host country. England, in 1900, and the United States, in 1908, favored target archery. Countries on the European continent, though, favored more exotic kinds of competition, usually more closely associated with hunting. After 1920, the International Olympic Committee took control of medal sports and archery was dropped because there were no standardized international rules. An international governing body was finally organized in 1931 to standardize rules and oversee competition, but target archery wasn't restored to the Olympics until 1972. From 1972 through 1988, standings were based on cumulative scores. Since 1992, competition has been based on a single-elimination tournament. The scores shown for those Olympics are for the gold medal contest between two archers. Top of page Year Gold Pts Silver Pts Bronze Pts John Williams, USA
Extractions: Qty: Archery Olympic Proclamation from the Executive Department - State of California issued in 1969. This historic document recognized archery as a Gold Medal Olympic Event in 1972 and proclaimed August 26 through September 1, 1969 as Archery Week in California. This Rare Proclamation was printed by the California Office of State Printing and has an embossed California Gold Seal and was signed California Governor, Ronald Reagan and Secretary of State, H. P. Sullivan and is over 36 years old. Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympics Games in Paris and was held at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. However, international rules had not yet been developed and each host country used its own format. As a result, archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely. Because of the lack of uniform international rules archery was then dropped from the Olympic Games. The Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc (FITA), the international governing body of the sport, was founded in 1931 and implemented standardized rules for competition. It allowed the first World Championship to be held that same year. After countries adopted the new rules, archery returned to the 1972 Games in Munich. Initially, only individual competition took place - the team competition was added in 1988.

Extractions: History Of Archery By Tom Brissee Stories similar to the one above have been shared over camp fires for 1000's of years. Of course, the equipment used has been updated almost constantly since the first hunter picked up a bow. Human beings, in general, just can't leave well-enough alone. Once we get interested in something, we start thinking of ways to improve it's efficiency. Let's take a look at the recorded history of archery, the study and practice of bow and arrow use. Arrowhead evolved to include the following: Half-moot tips-used to cut through the rigging of opposing ships. In 1208 AD, Temujin became Great Khan of the Mongols, better known as Genghis Khan. The Mongols used composite bows of approx. 70lb. Draw weight and used a thumb ring to release the bowstring. Unarmored Mongol soldiers would were silk under-shirts to minimize injuries inflicted by the arrows of the enemies. The silk fabric would wrap around the arrow head without being cut as the arrow stuck the Mongol soldiers. This would allow the clean removal of the arrows by slowly pulling on the silk fabric, eliminating further damage caused by the barbed arrowheads.
