Students become the archaeologist as they analyze artifacts left behind by various Native American cultures in Indiana's past to solve the puzzle: Who was here first? Reservations for the workshop can be made throughout the school year. In addition, Archeology Camp, geared for grades 5-8, is scheduled for June 9-11 and June 16-18. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including a mapping puzzle, making pottery, and garbology. Campers will also have the opportunity to explore the museum's archaeology collections and, weather and project permitting, visit a working archaeology excavation. The Timucua Indians A Native American Detective Story , an illustrated and interactive book geared to readers from ages 7 to 12, explores the history and culture of 16th-century Florida. It includes 47 "detective directives" that invite kids to follow clues and conduct their own archaeological and investigative activities explore a trash midden, speak some of the Timucua language, plant a feast, or figure out how the Timucua hunted 25-foot alligators. When the mysteries are solved, the reader becomes a certified Historical Detective. Written by Kelley G. Weitzel, senior preserve naturalist at the E. Dale Joyner Nature Preserve at Pelotes Island in Jacksonville, the $9.95 paperback book is the first in UPFs Young Readers Library publishing program. Weitzel, who teaches workshops and seminars about Floridas environment and its Native Americans, said recently the book allows young readers to "bring a little of the strength and wisdom of the ancient Timucua culture back to their present-day lives" and to enjoy the experience year around.

Extractions: Today, the Environment Departments City Archaeologist manages the archaeological remains located on public land in Boston, and over 27 collections of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts held by the City. The City Archaeologist is also committed to public outreach and education in archaeology for Boston city schoolchildren and the public. The City Archaeology Program offers a number of opportunities for the public to experience Bostons archaeological legacy. The 4,000-square-foot City Archaeology Laboratory, Education, and Curation Center is located in the North End in the brick, gold-domed building between the entrance to the Callahan Tunnel and the exit of the Sumner Tunnel, just 200 feet west of the Freedom Trail. At present, the lab is open Monday through Friday by appointment, and on weekends for special events. During the last year, thousands of visitors toured the lab and viewed the collections. Other activities offered by the City Archaeology Program include a hands-on artifact type collection, an artifact washing and processing station, an experimental Native American ceramic workshop, a simulated dig box, and many other stations. The City Archaeology Program is staffed entirely by volunteers. Many of these volunteers are Boston schoolchildren enlisted through their participation in archaeological workshops offered by the City Archaeology Program. Other volunteers include graduate students from local institutions, home-schoolers, teachers, interested citizens, and members of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society. Excavation opportunities in the Boston area allow volunteers to participate in digging at an archaeological site.

The goal of this unique partnership is not to teach kids how to be archaeologists, but rather to use archaeology as a tool to stimulate creativity and interest in learning about cultural heritage.
