Home Cultural Heritage Arboreta Blundell's Arboretum Canary Island Pines An arboretum is a plantation of mixed species established for comparative purposes. Numerous arboreta were established in the ACT during the early stages of the City's development. These were established in a variety of locations to test the landscape and economic potential of various types of trees. ACT Forests manages all arboreta within its estate in line with its cultural sites of significance More information can be obtained from ACT Forests headquaters The ACT's oldest and largest arboretum was located on Blundell's Flat. Its first planting was in 1929. Blundell's Arboretum was extensively damaged in the January 2003 Fire. It covered an area of over 6 hectares and contained numerous species, varieties and hybrids of pine, fur, spruce and other trees. ACT Forests and Friends of Arboreta are currently working on a plan to reinstate Blundell's Arboretum. The Canary Island Pines near the Mt Stromlo observatory were planted in 1915. They survived the 1952 fire that destroyed 240 hectares of the older plantations in Stromlo and there are now signs that some of them are shooting after the January 2003 Fire. These Canary Island Pines are amongst some of the oldest plantings still surviving in the National Capital. They can be seen from the road as you drive to the summit of Mount Stromlo.

Extractions: Honoré Hacanson At the March 26, 1999 Rhododendron Species Foundation (RSF) executive committee meeting, the RSF executive officers voted to officially end the second endowment challenge. Fifty-four thousand dollars have been raised toward the $100,000 challenge to date. Our benefactor has agreed to match $50,000 of that . This brings the total of $900,000 raised in 1½ years to increase the total amount of the RSF endowment fund to $1,400,000. The portfolio is invested in fixed income investments, balanced mutual funds, and growth mutual funds. Our account executive works closely with the treasurer and the RSF finance committee to monitor the stability of these investments, and they are performing well. Up to 5% of the value of the fund earned in interest and dividends can be distributed to operations each year. This has been a hard fought effort in which so many of you have participated. We can all take pride in this major accomplishment. Special thanks go to Bill Lindeman, RSF treasurer, and chairman of the task force to meet the two endowment challenges. But most of all, our heartfelt gratitude goes to the benefactor who made all this possible!
