Extractions: Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute Home A Statistical Study By Adolescent Students On Relevant Issues, by Marjorie Hankin The measurement of adolescents can intrigue students when the subject is themselves and the measurements and statistics obtained concern topics which interest them. This unit relates to pregnant adolescent students with common interests, but could easily be adapted to any teenage group with different primary concerns. The lesson plans at the end of the paper are of a general nature, but the main thrust is still toward using data which the students provide to make the study more meaningful to them. The following lesson plans could be used for a three week unit adapted to the middle school or high school math class. Lesson Plan I will introduce the student to surveys, recording data, and graphing bar graphs, histograms, and frequency curves. Lesson Plan II is a study of the use of mean, median, and mode, using class attendance numbers. Lesson Plan III is a correlation study between two variables. The variables are height and weight. The students can gather data from their own class and make scatter diagram to see if they can find a correlation. Lesson Plan IV is a further study of correlation of two variables. It consists of using the same height-weight data and scatter diagrams from Lesson Plan II, and checking it mathematically using the Pearson r.

Extractions: Alberta Curriculum for Mathematics "All courses in the curriculum are revised on average every eight to ten years to ensure that they meet the needs of students as they move into post-secondary institutions and the workplace. Giving students the ability to use mathematics to solve a wider range of problems, both inside and outside of mathematics, and to use information technology, are two goals of the new curriculum. It includes a wider range of mathematical processes, concepts and tools to provide students the skills they will need after graduation." Western Canadian Protocol In December 1993, the ministers responsible for education in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories signed the Western Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education, Kindergarten to Grade 12. Several cooperative projects are underway, including the development of common curriculum frameworks with learning outcomes in mathematics, language arts and international languages. The first common framework in mathematics, Kindergarten to Grade 9, was released in English and French in June 1995.

Extractions: Marcella Ubben Candelaria This unit is designed primarily for 7th and 8th grade learning disabled students in a CBI (Community Based Instruction) program at a school with traditionally low math scores on standardized tests. The unit covers one semester, but with a different type of student population it could be taught in less time. The unit begins with basic number sense: counting, sequencing and number lines. The next concept is place value, using games and repetition to teach students that the place a number has is as important as the number itself. We will then learn about decimals using money. Next is an exploration of patterns in math and in the world around us, leading to the last item of geometry, where we will explore different shapes, their relation to each other, and begin a discussion of fractions. Analysis of Functions and Their Graphs as Models of Physical Phenomena: An Integrated Approach Using Maple6 William Glover This curriculum unit will focus on the use of deductive reasoning in the form of "if-then" statements and proofs. The unit will be presented during the second week of the first semester, and the methods will be applied for the duration of the course. The lesson plans for the unit will focus on deductive reasoning. The objectives of the unit include teaching students to:
