Extractions: From the Rodale book, The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook: Ankylosing Spondylitis I have ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a form of arthritis most people have never even heard of. AS causes inflammation along the spinal column, resulting in back pain and stiffness. ( Ankylosing means "rigid," spondy- is "spine," and -itis means "inflammation"). Men develop AS 2.5 times more often than women. Current estimates are that it affects about 318,000 men and 127,000 women. Ninety percent of cases develop between the ages of 20 and 40, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was 60, after my slipped disk operation in 1991. While no one knows what causes AS, there's been some suggestion that it may be an autoimmune disease, a description that also fits rheumatoid arthritis, another kind of joint disease. Normally, the immune system attacks only invading microbes, which keeps you from succumbing to infection. Sometimes, however, the immune system gets confused about what it's supposed to be attacking and turns its lethal power against the body itself. Depending upon what part of the body it attacks, any number of so-called autoimmune diseases can result.

Extractions: John Merchant aureq@inreach.com Background: Much of the recent useful research into AS has been conducted at Kings College, London, by Doctor Alan Ebringer and his colleagues, together with his work at Middlesex Hospital, London. Their findings have been summarized in this primer for use by asweb.com, created and supported by Tony Browneller, as an outgrowth in support of the asweb, created and supported by Brian Harris. Abstract: Definitions and abbreviations: For purposes of this discussion, IgA: Antibody, immunoglobulin A specific to klebsiella pneumoniae. AS: Ankylosing Spondylitis Please refer to the glossary at the end of this paper for more information. Modality and Expression of AS and Autoimmune Conditions It is estimated that approximately 7% of the conglomerate human population has the characteristic marker antigen B27, but less than 20% of these will get AS. Of these, perhaps 35% will actually require diagnosis and treatment; most will be either sub-clinical (not ill enough to warrant medical attention), or have totally inconsequential or unnoticed levels of this condition. Some few people actually have AS, but not the B27 marker. It is likely that these persons are genetically quite similar to those possessing the B27 characteristic, and the disease mechanism (K. pneumoniae) is the same as those with B27. These cases are identified typically through X-rays using classical definitions of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Extractions: by Ron Kennedy, M.D., Santa Rosa, California Ankylosing spondylitis may also be referred to as Strümpell-Marie (or Marie-Strümpell) disease, Bekhterev-Strümpell syndrome, and spondyloarthritis. It is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease characterized by arthritis, inflammation, and eventual immobility of a number of joints. The disease usually involves the spine and surrounding spinal structures and usually begins between the ages of fifteen and thirty-five years and affects young white males three times as frequently as females. Symptoms of the disease are generally milder among females. This disorder is seen rarely in people of color. Conventional treatment involves the use of Prednisone and other corticosteroids. Often patients are unable to tolerate the toxic side effects of these drugs. The alternative, nutritional medicine approach is to identify hidden allergies by blood test and avoid those allergens (primarily foods). Also enzyme potentiated desensitization holds hope for putting the disease in long term remission.

Extractions: Signs, symptoms and indicators Conditions that suggest it Contributing risk factors Other conditions that may be present ... Treatment recommendations Ankylosing spondylitis is an autoimmune disease which affects collagen structures, specifically the joints between the vertebrae of the spine. The joints and ligaments that normally permit the spine to move become inflamed and stiff. The bones of the spine may grow together, causing the spine to become rigid and inflexible. Other joints such as the hips, shoulders, knees, or ankles also may become involved. Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis appear most frequently in young men between the ages of 16 and 35. It is less common in women, whose symptoms are often milder and more difficult to diagnose. About 5% of ankylosing spondylitis cases begin in childhood; boys are more likely to have it than girls. When children develop ankylosing spondylitis, it usually begins in the hips, knees, bottoms of the heels or big toes and may later progress to involve the spine.

This results in pain and stiffness in the neck and back. Although there is no cure for AS, exercise can help relieve symptoms, and medicines are available to reduce pain. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) causes inflammation of the joints of the spine. Spondylitis is the medical term for inflammation of the joints of the spine. Ankylosis is the medical term for the stiffening caused by the inflammation. One in 2000 people in the UK have AS. It is more common and often more severe in men than in women, and usually begins between the ages of 16 and 40 years.

The joints and ligaments that normally permit the back to move become inflamed. The joints and bones may grow (fuse) together. The cause is unknown but genetics seems to play a role. A gene called HLA-B27 occurs in 90 percent of those with ankylosing spondylitis. Just because you have the gene, does not mean you will have ankylosing spondylitis. Other factors besides HLA-B27 are involved. Description from: Arthritis Foundation RECOMMENDED READING: Ankylosing Spondylitis: The Facts
