It took three baths to reveal the beautiful Australian Shepherd underneath coats of reddish mud and dust. After several weeks with us in foster care, a longer period with a great Aussie Rescue foster family, and a brief inappropriate placement, Harley went to his "forever" home with someone who appreciates him as he deserves. Who could possibly not appreciate a dog like this? Yes, all three of the pictures below also show rescued dogsone from a shelter, two from breed rescue. Right: Kohl, who arrived with severe demodectic mange and bad hips, belonged to a student who couldn't cope with his terrible health problems. As a responsible owner who wanted the best for the dog, he listed Kohl with German Shepherd Rescue. The picture you see here was taken nearly eight years later. Today Kohl is going strong at nearly ten years of age. At left (click for larger picture): Kirsten, who was found tied to a shelter fence, and weighing only 43 pounds, regained excellent health. Extractions: The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria By Brian Sodergren The insurance industry appears to have dog caregivers on a short leash, or at least those owners who prefer large, powerful breeds such as rottweilers, German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, akitas, pit bulls, or chows. Insurers are re-evaluating coverages for homeowners who share their living spaces with such breeds. To the industry, the numbers are as sobering as a dog howling at midnight: One-third of all liability claims against homeowners stem from dog bites, a statistic that the insurance industry claims has forced it to pay out $310 million annually. For many insurance companies, these numbers add up to an outright ban on certain breeds. While such a step may have been considered extreme at one time, the industry says it is now just a consequence of the society we live in. But the consequences of breed bans stretch far beyond denied coverage and the dollars and cents of the insurance industry. The bans are also having a chilling effect on dog ownership in the United States, and are forcing shelters to deal with those who choose their insurance policy over their dog.

Practices under consideration include ear cropping, tail docking, and debarking (devocalization) in the dog, and declawing (onychectomy) in the cat. LEGISLATION In Canada, the only jurisdiction with specific regulations concerning these practices is the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Animal Protection Act stipulates: A person who cuts or crops the ear of a dog mistreats an animal.(1) In the United States, some states restrict the amount of the ear that can be cropped. In Maine, the cropping of a dogs ear is prohibited and constitutes unlawful mutilation.(2) In Argentina, according to the 1954 law on the protection of animals, it is considered an act of cruelty to mutilate any part of an animals body, unless it is for the improvement, marking, or hygiene of the species, or is performed as an act of mercy.(3) However, this is not interpreted to include ear cropping or tail docking, which are commonly done in Argentina.(4) EAR CROPPING AND TAIL DOCKING Position Statements The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) opposes ear cropping and tail docking in the dog for cosmetic purposes (Appendix I, a). The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) encourages veterinarians to counsel owners about the risks and lack of medical benefits before agreeing to perform these procedures (Appendix II, a).

The problem with this line of thinking is that it is just not true. At the public hearing expert after expert advised the government that they supported tougher dog laws. However, every credible expert told the government in no uncertain terms that breed bans were not going to increase public safety. In fact, several experts cautioned the government that this approach might actually decrease safety. All of the scientific studies of the affected breeds indicate that these breeds are not more inherently dangerous and that they are not qualitatively different from other breeds. The abstract of study on inappropriate aggression in dogs that looks at 5 breeds included this comment: Notably, disorders in aggressive behaviour were not registered within the Staffordshire Bullterrier breed.

Once a dog or cat has been admitted to HSGM's adoption center, he will remain at HSGM until he finds a home, no matter how long it takes. HSGM does not euthanize dogs or cats that are healthy (or treatable) and of good temperament. Before a dog or cat is admitted to the adoption center, they must first pass a health and temperament screening and of course, there must be space available for the animal. We wish every animal brought to HSGM were healthy and adoptable, but sadly that is not the case. The Society does offer the much-needed service of humane pet euthanasia to the public. If a person has a pet that has been seriously injured, is extremely frail due to old age, or is terminally ill and his or her quality of life is seriously compromised, they may bring their pet to be euthanized at the Society. However, the Society will not euthanize animals with treatable conditions such as heartworm disease, mange, kennel cough or upper respiratory infections.

The ban was placed on Bulldogs, Pekingese and Pugs just before Christmas 2002, although no formal statement was made as to this change of policy. British Airways Press Officer Richard Goodfellow confirmed that such a breed-specific ban had been initiated just before Christmas and told OUR DOGS: "British Airways have taken veterinary advice concerning three breeds of flat faced dog – Bulldogs, Pugs and Pekinese and have decided that we will no longer carry these breeds on BA flights, due to the respiratory problems these breeds can face. These problems can be exacerbated by stress and air travel can be stressful to dog, hence our decision."
