The first step is to begin to lend support (financial or otherwise) to the various organizations working to help the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. There are many organizations out there and choosing which ones to support can be confusing. Some organizations are more productive than others, while a few organizations do way more harm than good. Before choosing which organizations to support, you may want to decide which cause is most important to you and focus most of your attention on that cause. These laws, if allowed to pass, will theoretically cause extinction of the American Pit Bull Terrier and related breeds. These laws, regardless of their intent, are unfair, unconstitutional, and unworkable! BSL is a Band-Aid solution for a larger problem, period! Regardless of what issues are prompting the writing of such laws, BSL is fundamentally wrong and a solution for NOTHING!

Breed-specific laws increase costs for the community. Shelter costs for the community could rise as citizens abandon targeted breeds, and adoptable dogs of the targeted breeds would be euthanized at the shelter. In some instances, breed-specific laws have been overturned on constitutional grounds. Because proper identification of what dogs would be included is difficult or impossible, the law may be deemed unconstitutionally vague. It may also be found to involve the taking of property without due process.

These laws are usually passed after several attacks by a particular breed so that city councils can assure citizens they are doing something about a voter concern. But breed bans don't work. They target all dogs of a breed the innocent as well as the guilty; are difficult to enforce; and do not end the use of guardian dogs by criminals. If pit bulls in their various incarnations are banned, drug dealers and other felons switch to another breed or mix. In the early 1990's the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals required that member states to outlaw docking of dogs' tails . The last Conservative Government managed to juggle this political hot potato by making it illegal for anyone other than a veterinary surgeon to dock tails. They reasoned that vets would only remove dogs' tails if there were a good reason for it. Effectively this should have ended the practice without implementing a controversial outright ban. Unfortunately there were and still are a number of UK veterinary surgeons who whole heartily embraced the right to dock dogs' tails. Hiding behind the spurious welfare argument for failing to dock, they essentially provide a dock-on-demand service for dog breeders. Iin 1995 the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) attempted to bring a case against a vet who allegedly docked puppies for cosmetic reasons. The vet with the well-organised support of the Council of Docked Breeds(CDB) frustrated the RCVS by showing that it couldn't prove that the docking wasn't done for preventative reasons and the case was lost. From that point on the docking of all the traditionally docked breeds by a determined minority of pro-docking vets in the UK continued unhindered.
