Extractions: Animal Disaster Preparedness (ADP); What is it and do we really need to be concerned about it? Imagine these few scenes: Early morning, rains begin to cause the river to rise. Soon the news is that you have to prepare to evacuate, then it is confirmed that you have to leave. Are you ready in 20 minutes? How about your pets? You leave food and water out, animals and valuables upstairs, and guess what, you loose everything: Including your pets whose futile cries rendered them horse. They all died by drowning, crying out in vain for human help. You awaken to massive movement like the kids jumping on your bed or someone playing a bad joke on you. Around you your home creaks and collapses. You barely escape with your family. Once things settle down where are your pets? The cat, untagged and unmarked has bolted through the broken window, your fence has fallen down around the house and your dog is gone. Your children are frantic about their pets, what do you tell them? Fortunately at dusk several days later you find your cat, you can't catch her and don't have anywhere to put her if you did, at least you can feed her and the kids are reassured. No luck at the local shelters looking for your dog. There is nothing to make signs with and no photos to help with locating him. The roads are so bad it is not an easy trip to check daily or even get near the other surrounding area shelters; the phones are out so you can't call. What could you have done?

You bet By SANDRA ECKSTEIN The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ron and Ginger Anspaugh's dream dog a purebred English springer spaniel came from a pound in Jackson, Miss. Michael and Jody DuShane got their newest pug from a pug rescue group. Debbie and Gary Kazmier's show-quality black Persian cat was dumped with a cat rescue organization by a breeder who needed to get rid of some stock. Those are three of an estimated 1.5 million purebred pets taken into shelters each year. That's why advocates for animal rescue recommend people consider animal shelters and rescue groups even if they're looking for a purebred pet. And don't believe that all the animals in shelters are "damaged." Shelter workers say the problem is usually with the owners, not the pets. " 'We had a baby.' 'We're moving.' 'The kid is allergic.' We hear that every day," said Dorothy Wissler, director of Bartow County Humane Society, which works with the county animal control. "I've had unbelievable purebred dogs come in with their papers and even a receipt showing they paid $700, $800 ,even $1,200, for the dog they're dumping."

Extractions: Your main county animal shelter is located at 600 Aviation Drive in Camarillo, California, on the Camarillo airport complex. The facility was built in 1985 and can house approximately 400 animals. We can accommodate birds, livestock, and exotic animals as well as our most frequent guests: dogs and cats. Nearly every animal that comes through our door has one common bond: lack of owner identification. As much as we care for your animal, we would rather not care for it here. By identifying your pet with a valid license and ID tag you will do your pet, and your community, a great service. Adoption services are available during Counter Hours. Our adoption policy states that adoptions are on a "first come, first served" basis, but if two or more people desire to adopt the same animal at the time the shelter opens, or if two persons simultaneously desire to adopt an animal, a drawing will be held to determine who is allowed to adopt. We do not allow any person, for any reason, to 'reserve' or otherwise arrange for advance adoption arrangements. Our employees and their immediate family are prohibited from adopting an animal unless the animal has had at least one day's adoption eligibility to the general public. We provide services that include impounding of loose animals, injured strays, wildlife that is presenting a traffic hazard, public nuisance or health risk, euthanization services, unwanted livestock or fowl, nuisance animal investigations, bite investigations and quarantines, and license sales. We do not provide spaying and neutering, kennel services, microchip services or veterinary care to the general public.
