Aggressive Dogs In canada, animal control is largely a municipal responsibility. Breeders fallunder provincial jurisdiction as a business. Import of animals, medical costs http://www.safety-council.org/info/child/dogs.html
Extractions: Aggressive Dogs Threaten Public Safety The phrase " dog bite epidemic " appears on several US-based Web sites. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 4.7 million Americans - almost two per cent of the population - were bitten by dogs in 1994. One out of six required medical treatment. The American Humane Association calls dog bites a greater health problem for children in the US, than measles, mumps, and whooping cough combined, and points to data showing almost 70 percent of dog-bite victims are children under 15 years of age. The Insurance Information Institute Canadian Data Lacking Canada has no national data on canine population, dog-related deaths and injuries, or which breeds cause the most harm. In Canada, much of the insurance-related liability is borne by our health care system. Dog bites are a common reason for emergency room visits. Yet there is no mandatory reporting of these bites - not to mention the dogs' ownership, breed, spay/neuter status or history of aggression. The coroner's report on a six-year old girl killed by dogs in 1999 found that 117,000 Quebeckers claimed to have been bitten by a dog between 1997 and 1998. Of these, 75 per cent were under the age of 10 and half were bitten by their own dogs. Extrapolating these numbers, the Canada Safety Council estimates that dogs bite 460,000 Canadians annually. Our problem is likely as serious as that of our southern neighbor.

PAWS Kids Who Care PAWS operates a companion (pets) animal shelter, a wildlife center and hospital, kind methods to control canada goose populations and what s wrong with http://www.paws.org/kids/about/about.html
Extractions: About PAWS The Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is based in Lynnwood, Washington. PAWS operates a companion (pets) animal shelter, a wildlife center and hospital, and an advocacy department where staff work on education and legislation (laws). PAWS is not linked to the several dozen other groups in the United States that are also known as PAWS. PAWS is a non-profit organization also known as a charity. PAWS is almost entirely dependent on donations from the public. PAWS is run by a board of directors, who serve for three years. PAWS has approximately 50 part-time and full time staff. The only way PAWS can help all the animals is because of the 600 volunteers who help by feeding animals, cleaning cages, entering information into computers, walking dogs, answering phones, teaching children and building cages. History PAWS was founded by a small group of dedicated women in 1967. The founders of PAWS were concerned about the millions of unwanted animals in Shelters around the country. Approximately half of these unwanted animals were being euthanized or put to sleep because there weren't enough homes for them. The founders believed that the best way to prevent the killing of animals in shelters was to encourage spaying and neutering (a simple operation performed by a vet to stop animals having babies). They founded PAWS to raise money for low-cost spaying and neutering of Lynnwood-area animals. A thrift store was opened on Highway 99 to help raise money, but the store quickly became swamped with cats and dogs brought in by people who assumed that PAWS would be able to take care of them. Within two years PAWS opened the Companion Animal Shelter in rural Lynnwood. Since 1967, PAWS has found loving, responsible homes for more than 105,000 cats and dogs.

Contact Us Examples of how Breed Specific Legislation was DEFEATED in both Canada and Germany CANADA: Calgary's bylaw cops are rejecting moves by other Canadian centers to outlaw so-called dangerous breeds over dog attack fears. Several municipalities have recently instituted breed-specific legislation that bans or restricts types of dogs considered dangerous, with the County of Newell in southeastern Alberta being one of the latest to consider the tactic. But Calgary officials believe such laws do not get to the heart of the issue, maintaining their focus on responsible ownership through intensive licensing, hefty fines and education are more effective approaches. "We don't punish breeds, we punish behavior," said chief bylaw officer Bill Bruce. "The bottom line is, we believe all dogs are capable of biting." Jurisdictions in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan that have banned the ownership of dogs such as Rottweilers and pit bulls insist it is better to keep such animals out of the community altogether.
