It refers to the obligations that a Samoan owes their family, community and church and the individuals sense of Samoan identity. The concept of respect is also very important. This unquestioning demand for respect is taking its toll in modern Samoa as the younger generation, which is invariably better educated than its predecessors, constantly finds itself trying to balance the demands of a conservative Samoan society with its knowledge of the world, increasingly gathered from overseas education and experience. This has lead to one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Fa'a Samoa is also evident in the legal system which is actually two seperate systems, a western style system administered by a police force and justice department, and a traditional system administered at a village level. The two systems do occaisionally come into conflict with one another but generally things work smoothly enough. As a visitor to Samoa you are likely to encounter a few aspects of faa'samoa. Extractions: Established in response to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office (ASHPO) identifies, evaluates, registers, interprets and protects American Samoa's historic and cultural properties, from star mounds to shipwrecked vessels. The ASHPO provides communities and preservation organizations with a variety of services, and maintains an inventory of historic properties. It also reviews nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and oversees sites on that register. Under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the ASHPO reviews all Federal undertakings for impacts on historic properties. Mission Statement: It is the responsibility of the American Samoa Historic Preservation Officer to administer the Territorial Historic Preservation Program. It's a way of life that that binds the community together with important activities that include traditional ceremonies, oratory, singing, dancing, the telling of legends, the drinking of kava and the practice of tattooing. With the missionary heritage still strong, Samoans dress modestly. While young women may opt for western clothing, most women will have their shoulders covered and wear long loose dresses or knee-length pieces of material worn as wraparound skirts known as lavalava.
