Extractions: THE C IRCLE A SSOCIATION 'S African American History of Western New York We present an ongoing project to study the historical presence of Blacks in Buffalo, Rochester, Jamestown, Syracuse, Geneva, Ithaca, Corning, Niagara Falls, Canandaigua, Fredonia, and, in general, western New York State from 1700 to 2000. HISTORY I NTRODUCTION The first African slaves brought to this country were sold from a Dutch vessel at Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. There were 20 and from 1619 until 1776 there were 300,000 Africans imported. By 1860 there were nearly 4 million people in the U.S. of African heritage. Though the continent was invaded and had been occupied by Europeans for nearly 200 years. 18th century western New York was relatively untouched by non-Indians. I have found no records of non-Indians settling the area prior to 1770. There is evidence that the first non-Indian settling in the Buffalo area was a Black man. Of course the first African Americans settling the area certainly were well aware that slavery of their people was embedded within the European settled continent, and many gave extreme support to the Underground Railroad Many of the key persons discussed, below, from 1800 to 1880, are key because their efforts in the

Extractions: At the same time, Chapter 15 on the Tokyo war crimes trial showed that Hirohito and his advisers wanted to avoid any possible judicial questioning of whether he had been derelict in the performance of his duties as commander-in-chief, constitutionally obligated to issue orders to, and maintain the discipline of, his armed forces. For Hirohito, the Tokyo trial always carried the threat of exposing the deception that he had been a normal constitutional monarch. Wartime institutions, which had their own specific dynamics and produced their own modes of legitimation, strengthened this system of irresponsibility. They had the practical affect of immunizing the top leaders, especially the head of state, from the criminal consequences of their actions. The Imperial Conferences ( gozen kaigi ) and Imperial Headquarters Conferences attended by Hirohito ( More vividly than other institutions, the Imperial Conferences illustrate how the actions of the elites (including the emperor) were mutually dependent upon one another, and how elite political decisions were expressed in the theocratic ideal of the destiny of the imperial house (koun) and the sacred kokutai.

The country emerged from the war as the most successful and dominant nation in the world and soon embarked in a "Cold War" with the Soviet Union that would last until 1989. Americans themselves had experienced unprecedented economic growth during the war that would continue for several decades, but the impact of this prosperity was uneven, as was progress in gender and race relations. Both of these legacies of the war would shape American society, politics, culture, and economy throughout the rest of the 20th century. This course is a survey of American history from 1945 to the present. We will examine the legacies of World War Two, post-war American society, the Cold War at home and abroad, civil rights struggles, 1960s politics and culture of dissent, liberation movements among women, African-, Asian-, Native-Americans, Chicanos, gays and lesbians, war in Southeast Asia, new immigration, and society and politics at the end of the century. The emphasis will be on reading, critiquing, and interpreting history from the perspectives of ordinary people from diverse backgrounds. Thus, your readings are primarily first-person accounts and you will engage in a research paper and project using primary sources. This course is open to undergraduate majors and non-majors. There will be one in-class midterm exam, one research paper, and one take-home final exam paper. We will view films and use the internet to compliment lectures and class discussions.
